If you are like most Staten Islander’s you’ve probably taken a trip down to the Jersey Shore on a hot summer day. One of the most popular shore destinations for Islanders to visit is Long Branch, New Jersey. It’s closer than other towns like Seaside, and features the stunning gem known as Pier Village. The village includes apartments, restaurants, boutiques, beach clubs, and hotels all steps from the beautiful beach. Spending an afternoon in a place like Pier Village can make you wonder why the prime beach space surrounding Staten Island is so underutilized.  Thankfully, some Great Kills residents and business owners are looking to change that.

Development of the area may still be in the “idea” stage, but it’s easy to envision its potential.  The idea is dubbed “The Village of Great Kills Harbor” and would be located on the quarter-mile stretch of Mansion Avenue. The plan is to design an exciting community that would expand upon the six marinas, multiple restaurants, and homes already in the area.  In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, residents and business owners are pushing this plan to revitalize and improve the area.

According to the Staten Island Advance, supporters of the village imagine storefronts selling everything from ice cream to swim wear. The space hopes to become a destination center and green space that attracts tourism as well as residents within the community. The hope is that redeveloping this area will transform it into a year round destination for families to enjoy.
