Yet another large development is in the works for Staten Island. This time, it will be a 457,000-square-foot retail complex near the Outerbridge, toward the end of Arthur Kill Road in Charleston.
The proposed "Riverside Galleria" has been proposed by Melohn Properties Inc., a major New York City developer. Along with retail shopping and restaurants, design plans include a promenade overlooking the waterfront, a multiplex cinema, and a wetland preserve area. In addition, there will be multiple enterances, walkways, and parking for 1,850 cars.
As it stands right now, the project is expected to begin construction in 2016, and be ready to open in 2017. Architecture firm STUDIO V are in charge of the design. Jay Valgora, principal architect, stated that the island does not have enough retail areas to serve the needs of the community. "A lot of people are going to New Jersey to shop. So the idea is when they are driving over the Outerbridge they have to pass right by our development," he said.
