Lightning Strikes at St. John's University

Those passing thunderstorms we experienced on Saturday evening actually did a bit of damage. A telephone pole outside of the St. John's University library was struck with a bolt which caused a transformer to blow.

It's no wonder the pole attracted a lightning strike, since Grymes Hill sits about 300 feet above sea level and is the island's second highest point. Thankfully, there were no injuries. Earlier that morning, the school had celebrated the class of 2015's graduation and the library was empty.

Damages to the electrical equipment within the library are still being assessed. The library will remain closed for repairs, and it is unclear whether or not it will be ready by the start of this year's fall semester.
