The store is part of a New York City Initiative entitled FRESH which aims to provide healthy choices to underserved communities with a fresh selection of fruits and vegetables. Full service bakery, meat, and fish departments are just the beginning of the many options provided.

Key Food joins the stretch of shops located on Sand Lane between Olympia Boulevard and Father Capodano Boulevard. Key Food has undoubtedly breathed new life into the South Beach area. It has provided a much needed convenience to South Beach residents who will no longer have to make a long trip to the nearest market. In addition to providing the area with a new place to shop, it has employed three dozen workers, mostly from the neighborhood. The store has also begun partnerships with local schools and churches. Overall, this addition has been a welcome change to the South Beach, Staten Island community.
