The initial work on the multi-million dollar expansion of the Staten Island Mall is scheduled to begin next week in New Springville. In addition to physical construction, many electrical and utility upgrades will take place within the mall itself. The mall's owner, General Growth Properties, has stated that the improvements should not affect regular shopping. (We'll see about that.) Also stated by GGP, the project should be complete by 2017.
The project will add upwards of 420,000 square feet to the mall area. Among the planned upgrades are new fashion retailers, restaurants, a movie theater, public piazza, and a Fairway Market. This expansion is projected to bring with it 1,300 new jobs, and will likely boost economic activity within the borough. The expansion comes with a recent push to give the mall a more high-end image, with retailers such as Microsoft, Invicta Watches, Aveda, and Rack Room Shoes setting up shop.
The only drawback is that we'll be losing about 350 parking spaces due to the expansion. However, the total amount of spaces surrounding the entire mall premises still numbers around 7,000. There may just be a farther walk from the stores to the car at the end of the day.
