After the snow and sleet storm last week, I ventured out the next morning to start the cleanup.  Chopped ice on all the walkways, shoveled it away and spread some salt in the driveway hoping it would melt.  Most of it did; and before I went back inside, I sat on the porch, soaked in some vitamin D for 45 minutes and meditated.  It was so refreshing that I actually caught a second wind and started to clean my house!  How’s that for revitalizing oneself?

Did you participate in the Valentine’s Day 5K Run at Conference House Park or hike in one of the parks this week? There is so much to do outdoors on Staten Island especially with the changeable weather we have been having.  Get your boots on, bundle up and breathe the fresh air!  I learned how to…

Was it only a week ago that I was shoveling snow, chopping ice and wishing I was in a warmer climate?  As I write, the temperature outside is a surprisingly high 60!  Tomorrow, it will go back down to 30. The hyacinth, crocus and daffodil plants are abloom.

Spring has sprung which means it is time for growth of flowers, plants, children, a new outlook on life, perhaps a new job or a new relationship.  We all tend to make New Year resolutions or resolve to do better with our personal and/or work life, get back on the diet or exercise routine. When I was a teenager working part-time after school at the New York Public Library as a PAGE, I would sometimes get lost in the volumes of books I returned to the shelves.  I was an avid reader as a kid and not a big history buff, but I would just eat up anything about the history of Staten Island and New York City. The books had wonderful pictures of Staten Island as a wilderness.  My Dad would walk us to Sailor’s Snug Harbor in our neighborhood--a home for retired merchant seamen.  There were cows, horses and other livestock grazing on the property along Henderson Ave. and great “old” buildings (which still exist) where the snugs lived.  We would listen to the sailors relate stories of their lives and travels and how they came to retire on Staten…

As I watch the last snow fall of the season from my home office (yes, this is the last, hopefully), I dream sweet, pleasant dreams of warmer days, my garden and how much fun I’ll have digging in the soil, planting vegetables, new plants and flowers.  Positive thinking always chases the doldrums away!

This Saturday, 3/7, a blood drive will be held from 9-3 at the gymnasium of Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church, 23 Summit St. in memory of Firefighter John G. Chipura, who died a hero on September 11, 2001.  I met “Chippy” on a real estate showing a few days before 9/11.  His buddy was interested in buying a commercial building and accompanied him for a second opinion.  He told me he had been a police officer at the 72nd Pct. in Brooklyn; after a few…
