This Saturday, 2/28, girls (I prefer to call them young ladies) ages 16 to 18 years old can participate in a free day-long conference on “Girls Empowerment”.  Beginning with a light breakfast and check-in at 8:30 a.m., a who’s who of female power hitters will be speaking and leading these young ladies to explore their talents, strengths and learn from these inspirational leaders of our community.  The program will conclude with a fitness session on yoga and zumba. Another snowy week embraces Staten Island and the Northeast (How many weeks has it been?), and we look for ways to enjoy life and stop kvetching about the weather!  I stopped in to visit my friends at Wicked Stitches at 840 Castleton Ave. in West Brighton during a brutally cold day.

I hope you had a happy, healthy Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and enjoyed family and friends and maybe even started new traditions.  Maybe you volunteered by distributing presents to seniors at nursing homes or at hospitals in the pediatric units or served dinner at a community kitchen.  A group of my friends, who sing carols at Silver Lake Nursing Home each year, returned once again last Saturday.  Instead of singing only in the dining room, we visited the day room on each floor and were able to engage the residents in sing alongs.  I felt like we touched each resident, but, in reality, we were touched when many smiled, loudly sang along and thanked us when we left.  It took all I had to hold back the tears.

What did you do last weekend?  Meet the Greyhounds, adopt a precious kitten or watch TV wrapped up in a warm sweatshirt or sweater sipping hot cocoa?  This weekend will warm up a bit so get out of the house and enjoy the fresh air.

Borough President James Oddo launched the first session of the "Walk With a Doctor" program this past Saturday at Silver Lake. Each of these walks will be held in a different location and will include a chat with a doctor about the benefits of walking and staying active.

A group of Staten Islanders of all ages met at the bridge in Silver Lake Park and ventured out on a 30-minute stroll. The walk was lead by the borough president, as well as his wellness coroodinator, Dr. Ginny Mantello, and Dr. Ram Raju, President and CEO of NYC Health and Hospital Corporation.

For this session, the group was joined by endocrinologist Dr. Philip Otterbeck. Endocrinology is the study of hormones and the conditions that an imbalance can
