Even though it’s getting colder outside, there are still plenty of fun running events coming up in the Staten Island area. While the weather can be a challenge this time of year, there are lots of nice days left in the year and most events allow you to register even up to the day of the race. You may have to pay a bit more when you register late, but that way you can make sure you’ll be able to participate.
Richmond Rockets Halloween Run
The 8th annual run is scheduled for October 28th in Silver Lake Park and participants are encouraged to come ready to run in costume. The main event is a 5K that begins at 9am, and there will be awards for the top three finishers in each age group as well as the top man and woman overall. There is also a one mile race open to children in grades 3 to 8 starting at 10am and a Fun Run for kids 10 and under at 10:30.
The Wolf’s Challenge 5K
While this isn’t just a running event, it can be a lot of fun for runners of all experience and skill levels. The Wolf’s Challenge, scheduled for November 11th at 10am, offers many, well, challenges along its 5 kilometer route, but you’ll have help taking them on because this is a team event, not an individual race. It’s a great way to bond and enjoy the outdoors with friends and build memories that will last a lifetime.
Fall Flat 5K
If you’re looking for a more traditional trail run, you’ll likely enjoy the Fall Flat 5K on November 17th in Willowbrook Park. The course of this race takes runners around the lake and through the woods on the Greenbelt White Trail. It’s a mostly flat course that’s accessible for beginners as well as more advanced runners, and it’s a great event to start with if you’ve never done this type of thing before.
Staten Island Trail Festival
This festival provides runners with a great way to explore some of the Greenbelt and offers the options of 5K, 10K, 25K and 50K distances. It’s a fun way to spend a beautiful December day in Staten Island no matter how far you want to run, and the variety of distances gives you a goal to work toward for next year. The festival is scheduled for December 11th, and the start times vary depending on the distance you register to run.
