A group of Staten Islanders of all ages met at the bridge in Silver Lake Park and ventured out on a 30-minute stroll. The walk was lead by the borough president, as well as his wellness coroodinator, Dr. Ginny Mantello, and Dr. Ram Raju, President and CEO of NYC Health and Hospital Corporation.

For this session, the group was joined by endocrinologist Dr. Philip Otterbeck. Endocrinology is the study of hormones and the conditions that an imbalance can cause. Otterbeck explained that walking can elevate mood, improve balance and coordination, and strengthen bones. He went on to say that walking has been proven to lower blood sugar levels, blood pressure, and cholesterol, which can help prevent cardiovascular disease.

Oddo was quoted on silive.com, saying ""Walking is one of the easiest ways to exercise and can be done just about anywhere." The borough president hopes residents will take advantage of this simple way to stay healthier. "This program is the perfect way for people who aren't active yet to begin exercising and thinking about their health," he said.
