You are in for a treat this weekend, not only because today and tomorrow (Friday and Saturday) will be in the 70’s (extending my beloved Summer for a few more days) but because the 27th Universal Temple of the Arts Staten Island Jazz Festival takes place on Saturday, 10/18, from 2-7:00 at the Music Hall in Snug Harbor Cultural Center, 1000 Richmond Terrace.  The co-founder and executive director of the UTA, the tireless Sajda Musawwir Ladner, stated in a recent interview that the annual musical marathon "is a direct extension of Universal Temple of the Arts' mission of  'quickening the creative spirit in the individual and community and fostering brotherly love’.  It provides a stage upon which UTA's students, community members and world-renowned artists can present jazz programming to new and broader audiences, including underserved children and families, and to spur economic growth and tourism in S.I.”  Arrive early  around 10:30  a.m. and participate in different workshops being presented.  For information about the UTA, programs and performers go to:  http://www.utasi.org/Events.html

Also on Saturday from 12-4:00, Councilwoman Debi Rose, together with dozens of community partners, will sponsor A Community Expo of  Health, Wellness and Fun (food and music) at the beautiful Tuscan Garden at Snug Harbor.

“The Diary of Anne Frank” will be presented by Sea View Playwright’s Theater on 10/18 at 8:00 p.m. and on 10/19 at 3:00 p.m. in The Chapel Theater, 460 Brielle Ave.  Admission is $20, $18 for students and seniors.

The Staten Island Bicycle Association will meet in the parking lot of New Dorp H.S. for a weekly Bicycle Ride, 10/18 at 8:30 a.m.  Check out the website sibike.org or call Michele at 718-351-6970.

On Sunday, 10/19, enjoy Old Home Day at Historic Richmond Town. 444 Clarke Ave. from 10-5:00.  Here is your chance to learn first hand about candle making, furniture making, knitting, stone carving, tinsmithing and much more. Visit HistoricRichmondTown.org for further information.

Friends of Abandoned Cemeteries will sponsor a tour at dusk of the oldest and largest abandoned cemetery, the Fountain Cemetery, on Tompkins Court off Richmond Terrace near Broadway on Sunday, 10/19.  Established in 1801, this cemetery was originally a burial ground of the Native American Lenape.  You will recognize the names on many a tombstone.  Meet at 6:00 p.m. and bring a flashlight and a camera.

“Making Strides Against Breast Cancer”, a 5K/3 mile walk will take place Sunday, 10/19 at 10:00 a.m. at Clove Lakes Park.  Registration begins at 8:00 a.m.

Did you get away from the TV and computer this weekend?   I hope you put off cleaning the house to spend time with your friends and loved ones.  The dust will wait, I assure you!  Enjoy the weather and some of these great activities.  Let me know what you did this weekend.  Call me or write me below or at joan.coogan@gmail.com
