The Go!Healthy Food Boxes are full of the freshest local, farmer’s-market quality produce.  You receive 7-9 produce items in each box with a mix of fruit, leafy greens, vegetables and herbs.  Every week a recipe is included using produce from the box, and samples of that recipe are served.  Everyone is welcome. Invite your friends, neighbors, family to purchase a food box at Goodhue Center, 304 Prospect Ave. Tuesdays between 4-6.  You must sign up a week in advance through 11/13.  Each box costs $10 and you can pay with EBT, Cash, Credit/Debit and Health Bucks! This week we received apples, spinach, red onions, dill, beets, red kuri squash, purple peppers and radishes and a recipe for beet and cabbage soup.  

 

The 10th Annual SIEDC Health & Wellness Expo, sponsored by the Staten Island Economic Development Corp., takes place on Wednesday, 10/3 from 9-4 at the Hilton Garden Inn, 1100 South Ave. It is FREE to the public; all are welcome.  Vendors, demonstrations, FREE medical screenings, all day seminars and more will be available.  For info, visit www.siedc.org

Bring your toddlers, 3 and up to Family Storytime: Stay & Play Storytime on Wednesday at 4 at the Tottenville Library, 7430 Amboy Rd. First, the librarian shares some fun, interactive stories. Then stay, play and enjoy the library’s toys & exploration stations. Meet other families in the neighborhood!

The Toddler Series: Greenbelt Peepers will be held on Thursday, 10/4 from 9:45-10:45 at the Greenbelt Nature Center, 700 Rockland Ave. Through hands-on nature inspired activities, crafts and stories, 2-year-olds and their caregivers will become familiar with the sights and sounds of the forest. CloseKnit, at the Noble Maritime Collection, 1000 Richmond Terr., meets Thursday from 2-4.  The program is free and open to knitters of all skill levels.  The goods are donated to community charities including the The Seamen’s Church Institute’s Christmas at Sea program and the Elizabeth Coalition to House the Homeless. Consider joining us, or tell a knitter that you know!

For ages 5-12, join the Little Picassos at the St. George Library, 5 Central Ave. on Thursday at 3:30-4:30.  Is there an artist inside of you waiting to emerge? Then don’t miss this chance to draw, paint, and create. You will learn about famous artists and their style with a brief read aloud. Bring your toddler to an interactive program featuring, books, finger plays, songs and rhymes, followed by unstructured playtime at Toddler Rhyme Time & Toy Time on Friday, 10/5 at 11:30 at the New Dorp Library, 309 New Dorp Ln. Network with other caregivers and provide social opportunities for your toddler.

Join Catholic Charities of Staten Island and Borough President James Oddo for the Island’s Biggest Columbus Day Celebration--Festa Italiana at Mount Loretto, 6581 Hylan Blvd. on Friday from 6-11, Saturday from 1-11, and Sunday from 1-9! The event will feature rides, games, beer and sangria garden, the best food vendors around, live music on stage PLUS Special Guest Performances by Louis Prima Jr. as well as the Famous Giglio Band. Parking is FREE; there will be a $5 donation per person for entry which will benefit programs at Catholic Charities of Staten Island.

On  Saturday from 9-12, celebrate National Fire Safety Month in a FREE hands-on workshop where you and your child can build a model fire boat to put out shoreline or shipboard fires and transport emergency personnel and rescue workers. Once it is complete, you and your hero can decorate it with paint and stickers and give it a name like the historically famous fire boats that precede your new firefighting craft. On Saturday from 10-12, help the Citizens Climate Lobby to keep Clay Pit Pond healthy and Clean Up by picking up litter from our trails.  Citizens’ Climate Lobby works to empower citizens to connect with and influence their members of Congress to spread the idea that each one of us can address climate change.  RSVP by calling 718-605-3970 x201. For children 3+, Kids Club Pumpkin Lantern Craft will be held on Saturday from 10-12 at all Michael's Staten Island locations. Your children can enjoy making jack-o-lantern out of construction paper. Bring your children ages 1-5 to Music & Movement on Saturday at 11 at the New Dorp Library, 309 New Dorp Ln.  Sing, dance and reveal your child’s inner musician. The music time is dynamic and interactive, so come ready to participate in the fun.

Join the hour-long stroll through Seaside Nature Preserve on Saturday from 12-2 with the Protectors of Pine Oak Woods.  Scheduled for low tide, participants will take a look at inter-tidal life as well as observe the potential for expansion.  Meet at the entrance at the end of Nelson Ave. For more info, call Clay Wollney at 718-869-6327.

Bring your family to the Greenbelt Annual Pumpkin Festival on Saturday from 12-4 at Willowbrook Park, Eton Pl. where the prettiest pumpkins prevail in the patch!  Pumpkins are for sale on a first come/first served basis.

Cinema Saturdays is on Saturday at 2 at the Stapleton Library, 132 Canal St.  Watch the library become a movie theater and enjoy a fun film on the big screen!  Movie is good for all ages.

Pumpkin Picking at Decker Farm, 435 Richmond Hill Rd., begins Saturday and Sunday, 10/6 and 10/7 from 10-4 and continues every weekend in October.  Visit the historic 1800s Decker Farm for new educational and animal exhibits, tractor rides, face painting, vendors, crafts, and surprises around every corner! On Monday, 10/8, Columbus DayWillowbrook Park and the Carousel for All Children at 2 Eton Pl. will host family-friendly activities--fishing lessons with I FISH NY, a nature-inspired craft led by the Greenbelt’s environmental educators, face painting and a visit from Quiver Farms Petting Zoo. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation I FISH NY program is hosting the FREE fishing clinic.  Fishing equipment and bait will be provided.  This program is for all ages, and we encourage everyone to come. If you have a young child, we just ask that parents fish with them. The main parking lot is located behind the Carousel pavilion.

The Staten Island Children's Museum, 1000 Richmond Terr. will have FREE admission on the Cool School Holiday: Columbus Day, Monday from 10-5, sponsored by Macy’s. 

A Parents & Family Substance Abuse Support Group will be held on Monday from 7-8 at Christopher's Reason Recovery Center, 521 Arthur Kill Rd, 3rd floor.  If you know or are living with someone who appears to have a substance abuse problem, come talk and listen. Zion Lutheran Church & Preschool will host the 7th Annual Zoktoberfest on Monday from 11-4 at 505 Watchnogue Rd. Rain date is Saturday, 10/13.
