WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (10/11-13)

Many of you will have Monday off for Columbus Day so hopefully, your weekend is planned.  If not, check out the following events.  Are you ready for------“Rome Through Richmond Town”?  In response to the cancellation of the Columbus Day Parade, this is an experiment to celebrate all aspects of the Italian-American culture.  It will take place on Saturday, 10/11 from noon till 5:00 p.m. There will be entertainment, educational and cultural displays.  Participating organizations include Casa Belvedere, The DaVinci Society, the Garibaldi Meucci Museum, the Order of Sons of Italy in America to name a few. 

On 10/11 enjoy a Walking Tour of historic St. George from a Native American watering place to British Army stronghold, to a 19th century getaway destination.  Meet at the Staten Island Museum on 75 Stuyvesant Place at 1:00 p.m. and wear comfortable shoes.


Also on 10/11 at 8:00 p.m., at ETG Book Café, 208 Bay St., Joan & Gary Moore and Jeannine Otis will perform music of the American Civil Rights movement.  There will also be readings from the novel, “Emmett Till--the Civil Rights Act”, the tragic story of the Scottsboro Boys. 

On Sunday, 10/12, at 8:30 a.m. the New York Road Runners (NYRR) will host the Five-Borough Series:  Staten Island Half Marathon” which starts and ends at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George.  Children ages 2-12 can enjoy the fun at this event by running the bases of the Ballpark.

The NYRR Youth Running Series, will take place at 12:30 p.m. following the Staten Island Half on Clove Lakes Park's newly renovated cross country course. This event is for ages 10-14 only (grades 6–8). There will be four races--register your child through My NYRR.  Before and after the races, kids of all ages are invited to participate in free activities from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  NYRR staff will coordinate a variety of family-friendly games including roller tunnel, noodle javelin, an obstacle course, and potato sack races.


On Sunday 10/12 from 8-10:00 a.m., join Anthony Ciancimino for a Hawk Watch at the Cemetery of the Resurrection.  Meet at the first entrance to the cemetery beside the rest rooms, closest to Hylan Blvd. at 361 Sharrott Ave.

Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden at 1000 Richmond Terrace is hosting the 15th Annual Asian Harvest Festival on 10/12 from 1-5:00 p.m. to celebrate Asian heritage and culture.  Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for students and seniors.  Children 5 and under are free.



Monday, 10/13 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., the New Dorp Merchants Group is starting their own Columbus Day Tradition on New Dorp Lane, specifically in the Santander Bank Parking Lot on 10th St.  Free and open to the public, there will be rides, face painting, caricature artists, balloon artists and sidewalk sales.

The only reason they cancelled the Columbus Day parade is because our "elected" representatives are politically correct tools who have been pressured to distance themselves from evil old Columbus.
