Are you sorry to see Summer disappear and Fall creep in slowly but surely? I am a Summer baby and absolutely love the sweat, heat, sun, shorts and T-shirt type of weather. But if you are like me, don't despair! There are many events coming up on our wonderful Island that you can enjoy.
One of my favorites is “The Fence Show” at Snug Harbor Cultural Center. It takes place from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Originally scheduled for Saturday, due to an anticipated rainy day, it was rescheduled for Sunday. The art exhibit on the fence in and around the Harbor is an enjoyable event to admire, perhaps purchase any of the original pieces as well as meet your friends and neighbors. A Musical Chairs Chamber Ensemble will perform its “Open Air Music Festival” from 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. The best part of this event is it is FREE. You can enjoy walking through the Harbor, take in the sun on the Gazebo, visit the Botanical Garden, herb gardens, fish pond, Children's Museum. Have a wonderful, relaxing day.
If you are more of an outdoorsy, bird-watching type, The Protectors of Pine Oak Woods have a series of walks for you. Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to noon, explore Mount Loretto Unique Area to assess the migration of monarch butterflies. Bring binoculars and meet at the main Mount Loretto parking lot on Hylan Blvd. across from the CYO. Naturalist Mike Shanley can be reached at 917-753-7155 for more information.
From 2:00-4:00 p.m., explore the Conference House park and its history dating back thousands of years to the Lenape tribe to the present. Call Clay Wollney at 718-869-6327 for more info.
Sunday, the Staten Island Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America will host the 38th Annual Car Show and Flea Market at the College of Staten Island, 2800 Victory Blvd. Music, food, 50/50 raffle and a drawing to win a 1984 Corvette will also be sold. Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for children.
Also on Sunday, the Flagship Brewing Company’s first Oyster Festival will begin at noon to 8:00 p.m. at 40 Minthorne St. in Tompkinsville and will include a variety of food and music. Call 718-448-5284 for more info.
The 41st Greek Festival at Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church is back this weekend from 2:00 p.m. to midnight Saturday and till 10:00 p.m. on Sunday.
