Richmond Town is a historic area of the island, located at the base of Lighthouse Hill and bordered by Oakwood and New Dorp. Many of the original buildings in the neighborhood have been preserved as New York City Landmarks, and today, many public tours and events are held at this historic sites. The area is also home to one of the few remaining Volunteer Fire Departments in the city. Richmondtown is full of many unique old homes compared to the surrounding neighborhoods that may contain condominiums. Historic Richmondtown is great educational area which uncludes some of the historic landmarks preserved by New York city. Richmondtown is described as quiet and quaint, with many large colonial homes, rich greenery, and a branch of the New York Public Library.
