South Beach - Staten Island, NY

South Beach sits on the eastern shore of Staten Island, bordered by Dongan Hills and Midland Beach. The area was once known as Bungalowtown and was the site of many summer homes used for vacationing. In the past, South Beach was filled with small amusement parks, hotels, arcades, and casinos which brought in tourists from all over the metropolitan area. Today, residents are still attracted to the area because of its beachfront location and access to the expansive boardwalk used for walks, runs, and bike rides. This neighborhood felt the effects of Hurricane Sandy in 2012, but has since made a strong recovery. Within South Beach lie a few notable establishments, including the north campus of the Staten Island University Hospital, the South Beach Psychiatric Center, and a branch of the New York Public Library. At the foot of Seaview Ave, a new mini-amusement park for kids was built, as well as a new fishing pier, and a large sports complex is under development. Education options for this area are P.S. 39, P.S. 46, and P.S. 52. Public transportation routes that service South Beach are the local S51, S52, and S91 buses, as well as numerous express buses running during rush hours.
