Staten Island is more than meets the eye. Our borough is often regarded as "forgotten" but a closer look will reveal just how cool and unqiue it really is. A famous example was featured this week in the Staten Island Advance's "Cool Spaces" section- The 1888 Bechtel House.
This large golden Victorian beauty on St. Pauls Avenue in Stapleton was built in 1888 for the daughter of George Bechtel, owner of the Bechtel Brewery. It is currently owned by the Brown family. (Staten Island Advance/ Jan Somma-Hammel)

One might recognize this stately manor as the home of "Chalky White" from the Emmy Award winning HBO original drama series "Boardwalk Empire." The real life occupants have resotred the home to it's originally glory since they first bought it in 2001.Â

Stunning features include colorful German stained glass windows on the first landing, eight bedrooms- two with stained glass pocket doors, and 4.5 bathrooms. That's a whole lot of house!
The stairway platform with a wooden window bench on the front stairway is a stunning piece of craftsmanship. German stained glass windows circa 1887 shine though this home. (Staten Island Advance/Jan Somma-Hammel)(Staten Island Advance/Jan Somma-Hammel)
A home like this is just the tip of the iceberg for what Staten Island has to offer in rich history and charm.
