The newly formed New Dorp Merchants Group's mission is simple- to create an influx of shoppers in order to fill the vacancies. Once a bustling retail center, New Dorp Lane has fallen victim to competiton from popular shopping destiations like the Staten Island Mall. It is the Merchant Group's hope that more will join the fold of over ten new businesses that have opened in the past year.  The group will soon incorporate into a non-profit called the New Dorp Local Development Corporation and has big plans to set in motion.

Those big plans begin with the Columbus Day festival this Monday, from 11am to 5pm, right on New Dorp Lane. Activities include face painting and blow up rides for the kids, as well as entertainment from local dance studios and a sidewalk sale. Center stage will be located at the Santander bank branch parking lot on the corner of 10th Street.

Other improvements include a television commercial to air on Verizon Fios and Time Warner Cable showcasing the storefronts and business owners. 30 banners and storefront signs will be placed along New Dorp Lane to increase visual impact along the shopping district. Finally, the usual Holiday Lights will expand their reaches from Hylan Boulevard all the way up to Richmond Road.
