Have you ever met a person who seems to appear everywhere--volunteering at charitable functions, PTA president, selling raffles, participating in neighbohood clean-ups, running soup kitchens, teaching English to new Americans, tutoring students, reading to toddlers, working where needed in hospital settings, comforting hospice patients in their last days plus they take care of their own families, cook dinner, send their kids off to school with lunch in hand all with what seems like no effort.  Their pictures are in the newspapers and you question, "How do they find the time to be so involved?"

These people are busy for a reason.  The word "NO" is not in their vernacular.  Staten Island is honoring six women, pictured below, as the "Women of Achievement" on April 3 at the Hilton Garden Inn.  These women "comfort", "create", "donate" and "serve".  Reading about them is awe inspiring. One common theme is time management.  They state that without the time management skills they possess, they could not accomplish all that they do.

These women shared their pasts--they overcame shyness, diversity, immigrating from another country, single parenthood, discouragement from teachers or others.  They are ordinary women who accomplish extraordinary feats.  They recognize the need to volunteer to make the world a better place or to just make someone feel they are important or assist those in need. These women have a love of people and should and will be honored.  From my own experience, when you are busy, you are happy.  When you make other people happy, you yourself are fulfilled.  You don't think about yourself, your aches, pains, problems--you think of others.

It is easy to volunteer.  Every day in the newspaper you can read of community organizations that are awaiting your call.  You can also google "VolunteerMatch.com" a site that matches you to causes you may be interested in or concerned about.  You may be shy or hesitant; once you volunteer, you will have a new circle of friends and people who will appreciate all that you do. Try it; I promise you will like it.
