Although construction won’t begin for another couple of years, it’s not too early for Staten Island residents, and the rest of the city, to look forward to taking a ride on the world’s tallest Ferris wheel. This attraction, which will be installed on the waterfront near the Staten Island Ferry Terminal, will provide many benefits to the borough, its residents and any visitors who make the trip on the ferry.
A Few Stats
The new Ferris wheel will be 625 feet tall when complete. That’s 84 feet taller than the current record holder, the 541 foot tall Singapore Flyer, and 182 feet taller than the London Eye. The Staten Island wheel will also have a record-setting capacity for passengers. The plan is that 1,440 people will be able to ride it at once, an incredible number when compared to the Flyer’s 840 person capacity and the Eye’s 800.
Views and More
The height of the new Ferris wheel is really only a means to an end. The real reason it will be such an exciting addition to Staten Island is the views it will provide to riders. Looking out from the top of the Ferris wheel, passengers will be able to take in great views of the harbor and the rest of the city, from Manhattan to Coney Island and out past the Verrazano Bridge to the open ocean.Â
And the Ferris wheel is actually only one part of the development project that’s planned to transform the waterfront next to the Richmond County Bank Ballpark where the Staten Island Yankees play. Once construction is complete, the waterfront will also be home to an outdoor mall called the Harbor Commons and a new hotel that will make it easier for visitors to fully explore and take advantage of all the area has to offer.
