Exciting news for Staten Island Residents has been annoucned today! Governor Cuomo has instated a policy that discounts the Verrazano Narrows Bridge toll for Staten Islanders. This plan has been long awaited by residents tired of coughing up the astronomical fee. The plan could be put into effect as early as April 1st. The $14 Million Dollar deal required the state Legislaute and the Metropolitan Transit Authority each paying $7 Million.
Staten Island E-Z Pass Drivers will now pay $5.50 per trip over the crossing. In addition, all commerical vehicles with E-Z Pass are eligible for a discount if they make more than 10 trips across the Verrazano per month. It is expected that local commercial drivers, rather than out of state, will benefit most from the discount.Â
In a press conference this week Governer Cuomo said-
"The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge is a lifeline for Staten Island -- for its residents, for its neighbors, for its businesses and for its economy." "This toll relief will allow Staten Islanders to keep more of their money on the Island and will make a real difference for companies that rely on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge to keep their business thriving."
According to The Staten Island Advance, The Cuomo administration called it a "significant discount from current toll rates for Staten Island residents," who now pay $6.36 per toll for one or two crossings in a month and $6 per trip for three or more crossings per month.
The current passenger car toll on the V-N for non-Islanders is $15 cash or $10.66 when paid through E-ZPass.
