The South Beach Library, 21-25 Robin Rd. and the Community Word Project, will explore map making on Wednesday, 10/10 at 4 with Map Your World for ages 13-18.  You will look at examples of maps in the NYPL’s collections, including but not limited to historical maps, fantasy maps, web maps and artist’s maps.

For ages 7-13, Mask and Monster Craft will take place on Wednesday at 3 at the Huguenot Library, 830 Huguenot Ave.  Join the librarians for some mysterious and possibly supernatural fun! Please pre-register as soon as possible at the Library or call 718-984-4636.

On Thursday at 3:30, at the St. George Library, 5 Central Ave., bring your children 5+ to Reader’s Theatre.  Do they love stories?  The fun begins with a story and an introduction to acting via classic theatre games. They will create simple costumes or puppets and literally act out the story. This month, they will focus on Rapunzel.

On Thursday at 4:30, go to the South Beach Library, 21-25 Robin Rd. for a FREE film screening of Goosebumps (2015)--perfect for the whole family! A teenager teams up with the daughter of young adult horror author R. L. Stine after the writer’s imaginary demons are set free on the town of Madison, Delaware.

District 31 Middle School Fair takes place on Thursday from 5-7:30 at New Dorp High School, 465 New Dorp Ln.  Learn about the schools in District 31 and how to apply to middle school this fall. There will be presentations on middle school admissions at 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Take your children ages 18 mos. to 3 to Toddler Storytime: Toddler Time on Friday 10/12 at 10:15 at the Tottenville Library, 7430 Amboy Rd.  Your children will enjoy stories, songs, crafts and meet other toddlers in the neighborhood!

Bring your babies, toddlers, & preschoolers to Babies and Brew on Friday at 11 at the West New Brighton Library, 976 Castleton Ave. for a fun, unstructured playtime for your youngest children and coffee & snacks for you.

YMCA Teen Night will take place on Friday from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at the South Shore YMCA, 3939 Richmond Ave.  Register in person.

Kids 3 and up can enjoy creating a flying bat on canvas at Kids Club Flying Bat on 10/13 from 10-12 at all Michael’s Craft Store for a $2 fee.  Sign up in store or online or just drop in. Staten Island Public School Family FREE Fun Day takes place on Saturday from 10-2 at P.S. 41, 216 Clawson St., a celebration of the talents and achievements of our public schools.  Performances by many of the students, bands, dancers, singers will be available as well as crafts, prizes, give-aways and snacks with supplies last.

Come to the High School Fair–Staten Island, on Saturday, 10/13 and Sunday, 10/14 from 10-3 at Port Richmond H.S., 85 Saint Josephs Ave.  Workshops on high school admissions will be at 10:15 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. as well as a workshop on auditioning for arts' schools and programs at 11:30 a.m. and a workshop on Career and Technical Education at 1:45 p.m.  Registration is not required; call 718-935-2000 for more info.

The Westerleigh Parks Coalition are seeking volunteers to stop by and help with raking leaves on Saturday from 9-12.  It’s a great way to exercise and breathe in fresh air.  To sign up or if you have questions, contact westerleighparkscoalition@gmail.com

On Saturday at 11, the Stapleton Library, 132 Canal St. will host Sensory Storytime--a fun, new and interactive library literacy program designed to engage kids through movement, music, stories and sensory activity play. This program is ideal for children with autism spectrum disorders, sensory integration challenges or children who have difficulty sitting still. On Saturday from 11-3, the S.I. Chamber of Commerce and NYC DOT are hosting the first Downtown Staten Island Weekend Walk to Stapleton. Bay Street between Water St. and Vanderbilt Ave. will be closed to traffic and open for fun with sporting activities (including a live stickball exhibition), giant games (like Jenga and Connect 4), music and more. Come enjoy brunch at one of our local eateries or just take a stroll. The streets will be turned over to you!  Also, Councilwoman Debi Rose's Annual Community Fair in historic Tappen Park will be part of the festivities.

Learn how to Craft Cloth Dolls led by Everett Curry on Saturday from 1-2:30 at Ft. Wadsworth Visitor Center, 210 New York Ave. Participants will make a traditional rag doll--choose and match fabrics and trims, make it simple or a bit of stitching can be used to decorate to your own style. Are you certain your child car seat is installed correctly?  Attend the Free Car Seat Safety Check on Saturday from 1-4 at Richmond University Medical Center, 355 Bard Ave. in the parking lot at the Kissel Ave. and Castleton Ave. entrance.

The Historic Richmond Town’s Tavern Terrace concerts return with a lineup of themed live performances and autumnal activities on Saturday at 6 with Classic Rock with Geezer at 441 Clarke Ave. A traditional fire-pit and fresh apple cider are sure to put you in the fall spirit!  Proceeds from each Saturday performance will help to raise funds for the restoration of the internationally acclaimed acoustic music performance space, the J. Guyon Tavern, just in time for its 200th birthday!

Pumpkin Picking at Decker Farm, 435 Richmond Hill Rd. is on Saturday and Sunday, 10/13 and 10/14 from 10-4 and continues every weekend in October.  Visit the historic 1800s Decker Farm for new educational and animal exhibits, tractor rides, face painting, vendors, crafts, and surprises around every corner! On Sunday, 10/14 from 12-3, you will be able to dispose your confidential documents (a 4-bag limit) at the “Secure Shred” event at the Staten Island Mall, 2655 Richmond Ave. on the corner of Platinum and Richmond Avenues.  Hosted by State Sen. Lanza and Assemblyman Cusick, this event is an effort to help Staten Islanders protect themselves from identity theft, in a FREE and secure way. 

Discover Herbs, Plants and “Bopper” on Sunday at 2 at Ft. Wadsworth, 210 New York Ave. Join Skye Suter in historic Mont Sec House for an exploration of popular herbs from the late 1800’s. Charles Winne Jr. “Bopper” was a young boy living in the fort at this time. See the floral world through his eyes and learn about the herbs and plants he might have discovered during his adventures.  There will also be a lesson in pressing plants for a botanical scrapbook, or herbarium. On Sunday from 4-6, at Art on the Terrace, 776 Richmond Terr., attend Second Sunday Readings by Joelle Morrison, with vignettes about extraordinary "ordinary" people in the neighborhood she lived in from the 1960s to 1990s. Supported in part with a 2018 NYC DCA Premier Grant for literature, through Staten Island Arts, you will be transported back in time with her wonderful stories--"The Butter Vultures of Cherry Street" and other Lower East Side tales!  Music by Joan and Gary Moore Refreshments and schmoozing to follow.  Free Admission.

On Sunday from 7-9, enjoy a FREE concert at Snug Harbor, 1000 Richmond Terr. featuring the Wahoo Skiffle Crazies and Weathervane.  Bring a blanket or a beach chair and enjoy the unseasonable warm weather!

Halloween decorations are one thing but these nutjobs who bedeck their yards with realistic and graphic scenes of hanged bodies, dismembered corpses, baby-eating demons, etc. are soulless, mentally deranged lunatics who deserve to have their houses egged.

Thank you for your comments Andrew! I agree with you about those who adorn their front lawns as graveyards and other terrible things straight from "Walking Dead" and other sci-fi killing/murder/monster shows, which, btw I cannot watch! As far as egging their houses, I would never condone that kind of behaviour. Thank you for reading, Andrew!
