How many of you are now Jazz fans after attending the Staten Island Jazz Festival last Saturday?  Have you or your offspring signed up for one of the many classes being offered at the Universal Temple of the Arts?  Visit: UTASI.org for information on classes.  Did you help plant trees at the Greenbelt last week?  

I suppose all thoughts are on Halloween--decorating the house or your yard and making or buying costumes for the kiddies.  My grandson helped me decorate with ceramics ghosts and pumpkins made by my Mom over the years.  He chooses the different paper decorations made or inherited to tape to all the windows and front door.  We both have fun, and he adds his creative touches.  How many of you decorate with your children and then change it to suit yourself?  I don’t!  I appreciate the way my grandson views his surroundings and when he notices changes in my house each time he visits.  I am in awe of how my baby granddaughter looks at the photos on the mantel and recognizes her parents, aunts and uncles and stares at other photos intently.  Halloween—here we come!

If you are looking for something different and spooky to do for Halloween, check out the Kreischer Mansion Halloween Thrill 2015 taking place on Saturday 10/31 at 8 p.m. and ending Sunday 11/1 at 3 a.m.  This landmarked Mansion is located at 4500 Arthur Kill Rd. in Charleston.  Experience the hauntings that span all three floors and basement. Tonight, Thursday 10/22 at 8, make it a point to attend the Sundog Theatre Fall Reading series and reading of an original play “Softball is Life” by Dwayne Yancey, at Galerie St. George, 11 Phelps Pl.  Visit: galeriestgeorge.com or call 718-816-5454. 

On Friday, 10/23 at 7 join Staten Island OutLOUD’s exploration of  “The Great Gatsby” continuing with readings from Fitzgerald’s short story “Absolution” at Staten Island Academy, 715 Todt Hill Rd. 

Join the Olivet Presbyterian Church, 97 Myrtle Ave. on Friday at 8 for performances by area students expressing themselves through spoken-word poetry and rap with a common theme:  PEACE.  Call 718-981-5043 for more info. 

Saturday, 10/24 from 11-3, join a fun-filled day of scarecrow building, pumpkin carving, bobbing for apples and more at the Harvest Festival at Clay Pit Pond State Park, 2351 Veteran’s Rd. West, your back yard.  Call 718-605-3970, ext. 201 for info.

Saturday from 8-10, join birder Anthony Ciancimino through the fields of Mount Loretto Unique Area for a guided nature walk.  Meet in the parking lot off Hylan Blvd. across from the CYO Center.

Bring your leaves in clear or brown bags to ETG Book Café, 208 Bay St. on Sunday 10/25 from noon-2.  Leaves are an excellent source of nutrients and trace minerals and ideal for composting.  The folks from ETG will turn your leaves into rich compost. 

Dia a de Muertos or Day of the Dead Celebration takes place on Sunday, from 10-6 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic School, 285 Clove Rd. This annual traditional community event honors  the lives and memory of loved ones who have died.  The Public is invited to bring food, flowers and photos to make a community ofrenda-altar to honor loved ones.  You will experience dance and music, family fun and educational presentations about Mexico’s special traditions and customs.   

Put this on your calendar:  On 11/8 from 12:30-3:30, “Optimism Strikes out Parkinson’s” Bowl-A-Thon, an annual event to help raise awareness and funds for Parkinson’s Disease.  There will be raffles for local community prizes and baskets.  Event takes place at Rab’s Country Lanes, 1600 Hylan Blvd. Registration is $25/person, which includes pizza, soda, t-shirt, bowling shoe rental and open bowling for two hours. All are welcome to bowl; if you can’t bowl, you can come and root on the bowlers or send a donation to: www.apdaparkinson.org
