October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. I applaud all my readers and friends who walked in and donated to the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk fundraiser. Breast cancer is one of the most common kinds of cancer in women. About 1 in 8 women in the United States will get breast cancer at some point. The good news is that most women can survive breast cancer if it is found and treated early. A mammogram, the screening test for breast cancer, can help find breast cancer early when it is easier to treat. Men can get breast cancer, too–over 2,000 men are diagnosed each year. Did you take part in Open House New York (OHNY) on Staten Island this past week? There were many to choose from and events at the following sites: Tech Products, Inc.'s tour, the Governor's House at Snug Harbor, the Snug Harbor Studio Artists, Alice Austen House Museum, the Battery Weed at Ft. Wadsworth, Staten Island Compost Facility at Freshkills Park, Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art, Conference House Park Edition and the National Lighthouse Museum.
Presented by Staten Island OutLOUD at the Noble Maritime Collection at Snug Harbor Cultural Center, Prof. John Rocco of SUNY Maritime College shared stories of author Herman Melville’s life and work on Staten Island and his role in American pop culture. It was interesting to hear of Melville and his family, most notably his brother, Thomas, the Governor of Sailor’s Snug Harbor, and to discover that Melville decided to write poetry only after his novels did not sell well. One of my favorites and a classic, “Moby Dick” touched me when I read it; and life at sea became a mystery to me of excitement, loneliness, camaraderie, pain, sickness, love? As kids, my Dad brought us to Sailors' Snug Harbor where we would sit on a bench and listen to the Snugs relating their stories of the sea. These old men, these seamen, were fascinating, and we were hooked. I thank Prof. Rocco, Beth Gorrie, Staten Island OutLOUD and the Ciro Galeno, Director of Noble Maritime Collection for presenting this enlightening and entertaining event. Copies of Nathan Philbrick’s “In the Heart of the Sea” were given to all who attended. A few weeks ago, I posted photos from the 50th anniversary reunion of our high school graduating class. None of us are getting any younger, but we can sure be optimistic! What fun we had that day; we chatted and bantered as if we were still 17 or 18--teenagers!

Visit the exhibit--Treasures with Donna Napoli: Staten Island at the H.H. Biddle House in Conference House Park, 70 Satterlee St. on Wednesday, 10/23 from 1-5. This exhibit highlights the various “Mom and Pop” businesses, historic homes, parks, and wildlife. She wanted to "preserve" their charm and value as local treasures.
The Thursday M.O.P.S. The Noble Maritime Collection, 1000 Richmond Terr., will host a screening of Universal’s classic 1954 monster movie “Creature from the Black Lagoon” rated G on Friday at 6:30. The film is a take on beauty and the beast—the beast in this case being a monstrous combination of man and fish. Moviegoers are welcome to come in costume. Admission $5 at the door.
