It is never too early to start volunteering or encourage your offspring, nieces, nephews or neighbor youth to do the same.  The Staten Island Children’s Museum is accepting nominations for the 24th Annual Kid of Achievement Award.  The award, which acknowledges the hard work of an 11 to 18 year old whose volunteerism has made a difference in the community, comes with a $100 honorarium and a framed certificate that is bestowed at the museum’s Circle of Friends business luncheon.  It takes place on 11/12 at the Hilton Garden Inn.  For more information on how to nominate your child, deadline, etc., call 718-273-2060, ext. 151 or visit http://sichildrensmuseum.org/

Open to all youth who worked this summer through the NYC SYEP—Summer Youth Employment Program and are currently in school, internships are available through the New School Year Employment Program.  Applicants must be enrolled in high school or college and be between the ages of 14 and 24.  United Activities Unlimited will administer the program and provide internships in various partnered businesses in Staten Island, Manhattan and Brooklyn.  Applications can be completed online at http://www.nyc.gov/html/dycd/html/jobs/jobs.shtml; deadline for submission is Friday, 10/16. The Department of Education has begun accepting registration from families seeking to have their child take the Gifted and Talented exam.  The deadline to register for testing is November 9. Friday, 10/9 at 7, the Staten Island Geological Society will host a program “The Old Farmer’s Almanac:  Is it Accurate and Relevant”.  Speaker will be Bill Mirabello at St. Clare’s School, Father Hicks Center, 151 Lindenwood Rd.  

This Saturday, 10/10 from 11-2 is “IT’S MY PARK CLEAN UP” at Tompkinsville Park at the intersection of Bay St. and Victory Blvd.  Join the IslandVoice, along with students from St. John’s, Wagner College and the Parks Dept. to take part in raking, weeding and cleanup.  On Sunday, 10/11 the NYPD FREE Bike Registration and Parks Puppet-Mobile will take place in the park.

You can take your family Pumpkin Picking every weekend in October from 11-4 at the historic 1800’s Decker Farm, 435 Richmond Hill Rd.  Take a farmhouse tour, enjoy a hayride, get lost in the cornstalk maze, take part in arts and crafts and bring home a pumpkin.  Free shuttle bus service from Historic Richmond Town parking lot to the Farm.  Admission is $6 for Adults and children over 1 or a $20 Family Four Pack.  On Saturday, 10/10, the farm will be closed to take part in Rome through Richmond Town (see below), For info, visit http://www.historicrichmondtown.org/decker-farm 

The Annual Women in Leadership Forum takes placeon Saturday, 10/10 from 10-1 in the community room of Richmondtown Public Library, 200 Clarke Ave.  The event is FREE and open to the public. 

Admission is FREE at Rome Through Richmond Town on Saturday from noon-5, a Columbus Day weekend event celebrating Italian immigrants, their impact on history and their contributions to America.  You will be able to taste samples of pizza, pastries, gelato, Italian ices, enjoy cooking demos, cultural exhibits, and music performances. The Heritage Fair at Nansen’s Lodge, 3441 Victory Blvd. will be on Saturday beginning at noon.  Admission is FREE. On Sunday, 10/11 from 5-11, the Historic Tappen Park Community Partnership will showcase a year-long series of light-based art activities and installations Illuminate Stapleton along a one-mile corridor between Stapleton and Tompkinsville.  There will also be entertainment, an artist market, community information tables and food.
