On Sunday, the St. Peter’s High School for Girls Alumnae Association held their Annual Reunion Brunch at LiGreci’s Staaten. Our class of 1969 had a great turnout. Those 50 years seem to have flown by in a blink. It was so much fun trying to figure out who was who as we gathered--there should have been name tags! Looking at my fellow classmates in my mind’s eye as teens, we still look terrific! We laughed, told stories, anecdotes from those days, took loads of photos and posted them. Some of the stories I remembered vividly, some I had no recollection of at all. Life happens, and we deal with every day issues, problems, heartaches, joys. Take an Adult Afternoon Hike to Pumphouse Pond at High Rock Gate in High Rock Park in the Nevada Ave. parking lot on Wednesday, 10/9 from 1:30–3:30. Enjoy the picturesque views of the park, as a few of the unique features that make each park special are pointed out. Pace of the hike will be determined by the pace of the group. Good for ages 18+.
The children will enjoy Wednesday STEAMDay on Wednesday at 4 to the Stapleton Library, 132 Canal St. They will have a blast exploring science, technology, engineering, art and math! Good for ages 3-5, and 5-12.
Bring the children to Tween Crafters: Halloween Keychains on Wednesday, 10/9 from 4-5 at the Mariners Harbor Library, 206 South Ave. Design your own Halloween keychains to celebrate the spooky holiday! With charms and beads, use your imagination to make it your own! All materials provided. For children, ages 5-12 years, ages 13-18 years. First come, first served.
Senator Andrew Lanza and 1199 SEIU Employment are hosting an Interview Event on Thursday, 10/10 from 9:30-4 at the Woodrow United Methodist Church, 1075 Woodrow Rd. Bring your resume. You must be 18+ to attend. Greenbelt Peepers for Two-Year-Olds takes place on Thursday from 9:45–10:15 and Greenbelt Tree Tots for Three-and Four-Year-Olds takes place on Thursday from 11–11:45. at Greenbelt Nature Center in Blood Root Valley, 700 Rockland Ave. at Brielle Ave. This event repeats every week on Thursday until 12/5/2019. Through hands-on activities, crafts, and stories, the children and their caregivers will become familiar with the sights and sounds of the forest. Please note: Space is limited. The College of Staten Island Alumni will host Movies Under the Stars: Aladdin on Thursday from 6:30-9 at the College of Staten Island, Racetrack Lawn (rain location Gym 1R). The Future Culture Creative Placemaking Grand Application Seminar will take place on Thursday from 7-8:30 at Staten Island Arts, 23 Navy Pier Ct. At this seminar, you will learn about the NYSCA Future Culture Creative Placemaking Grant and questions can be answered about the other grant programs offered. Sensory Storytime takes place on Saturday at 11 at the Stapleton Library, 132 Canal St. It is a fun, new and interactive library literacy program designed to engage kids through movement, music, stories and sensory activity play. This program is open to all and is ideal for children with autism spectrum disorders, sensory integration challenges, or children who have difficulty sitting still. The NYC Dept. of Parks & Recreation Play Mobile is providing family friendly fun activities at Tompkinsville Park, Victory Blvd. and Bay St. on Saturday from 12-3. The Play Mobile is stocked with recreational games, toys and more. The mobile unit staff will keep children engaged in fun activities and is perfect for outdoor family fun. The event is free and open to the public.

The Rotary Clubs of Staten Island and Rolling Thunder Chapter 2 NY are once again organizing the Staten Island Oktoberfest on Saturday (rain date is Sunday 10/13) from 12-7 at Historic Richmond Town, 441 Clarke Ave. Admission is $10 and includes one free drink. All Proceeds will go to helping Veterans in need. There are plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy: Food, Carnival Games, Entertainment, Rides, Bouncy House, Vets Are Free, German Beer, Free Parking as well as two bands: an Oktoberfest German Band, and the Resistance. We will also have a DJ and MC to get you in the Oktoberfest mood from 1-7pm. Come and enjoy and have a great time.
Participate in Tree ID Hikes on Saturday from 1-3 at Clay Pit Ponds Visitors Center, 2351 Veterans Rd. W. Learn your trees while you take a mile-long hike. Good for ages 8+.
The Turn & Learn Compost Work Day (NYC Compost Project) will take place on Saturday, 10/12 from 1-3 at the Compost Demonstration Site in Snug Harbor Cultural Center, 1000 Richmond Terr. Enjoy the fresh air and beautiful surroundings while working on the NYC Compost Project demonstration site. The best way to learn about compost is to make it, and attending our Turn & Learns will make you a pro. Bring a water bottle, wear closed-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. If you help us make compost, you can take compost. Please bring your own container. (Please note this is a volunteer event and not a pick-up event. Bring the family to the Italian Festival at the Mount at Mt. Loretto, 6581 Hylan Blvd. on Friday, 10/11 from 6-11, Saturday 10/12, Sunday 10/13 and Monday 10/14 from 12-11. The island’s Biggest Italian Festival is at Mount Loretto Columbus Day Weekend! Featuring food, rides, games, contests, cultural centers, beer and sangria gardens, live music onstage and more! Staten Island Zoo Goes Blue for Autism on Monday, 10/14 from 9-12 at 614 Broadway. The Zoo is once again proud to be Going Blue in partnership with Autism Speaks, providing a friendly, judgement-free environment for families affected by autism spectrum disorders. The day will allow families to enjoy the great offerings provided by the zoo, in addition to animal presentations, sensory exploration activities, and a scavenger hunt! A quiet area will be available for families who would like to take a break from the activities. Gates will open one hour early at 9 am so families can enjoy the exhibits in a more private setting. Activities will run until 12:00pm. Limited tickets available for online purchase only. General Admission ticket price ($6.00) includes activities for all! Tickets much be purchased in advance. Parents & Family Substance Abuse Support Group meets on Monday, 10/14 from 7-8 at Christopher's Reason Recovery Center, 521 Arthur Kill Rd., 3rd floor. If you know or are living with someone who appears to have a substance abuse problem, come talk and listen. The goal of this group will be substance abuse education, referral sources, support family and friends.
