I met some of my gentle readers and friends I haven’t seen in quite some time at the “Optimism Strikes out Parkinson’s” Bowl-A-Thon on Sunday at Rab’s Country Lanes. The raffles were terrific and the bowlers were fantastic.  I just watched but remember how enjoyable it is to bowl (when you aren’t super competitive and just play to have fun).  Did you participate in the PUMPKIN SMASH last Saturday so the NYC Compost Project can turn them into compost for parks and green spaces?

 

PLEASE TELL YOUR CHILDREN OR NEIGHBORHOOD YOUTH:  AHRC NYC is offering the Young Adult Internship Program (YAIP).  If you are between the ages of 16-24, out of school, not employed, do not have a college education, call Anna, 718-662-1432 for more information.  You will need photo ID, proof of age, proof of address, proof of eligibility to work.  If accepted, interns will receive 4 weeks of paid orientation, 10 weeks of paid internship, work readiness training and job counseling.  AHRC is located at 25 Victory Blvd. 2nd Fl.

Early registration has begun for emergency snow laborers who remove snow and ice citywide from bus stops, crosswalks, fire hydrants and streets in the City after heavy snowfalls. (I know, I know—who wants to think about SNOW?!)  Individuals interested can register at their local district Sanitation garage, weekdays between 7 and 3.  They will be paid $13.50 per hour, and $20.25 per hour after 40 hours are worked in a week. Applicants must be 18+ years of age, eligible to work in the U.S. and capable of performing heavy physical labor. You must bring two small photos (1½" square), original and copy of two forms of identification and Social Security card. http://www1.nyc.gov/site/dsny/index.page 

Along the same vein: Where-to-Turn is looking for volunteers for the Snow Shoveling for Seniors Program.  If you read my blogs this past winter and recall my kvetching about the tons of snow I was shoveling every week, a lot of us are getting older (not me, of course) and need help with the task.  There are nearly 10,000 students eligible for the program (7th grade through college).  A senior requesting this service will be matched up with the child/teen/young adult who lives within walking distance.  Please visit www.where-to-turn.org or call Dennis McKeon at 718-966-6531. 

The FREE Memory Screening Event, is today, Wednesday, 11/11, from 9-11 a.m. at the Colonnade Diner, 2001 Hylan Blvd.  Sponsored by the Advanced Memory Institute and Staten Island Agency for Alzheimer’s & Dementia, there will be a Q & A session, brief screenings of memory function and light breakfast for registered attendees only.  RSVP at 718-667-7110.

Friday, 11/12 at 9 a.m., the SIUH/NS Health System mobile van will be at Tompkinsville Park, Victory and Bay, to deliver FREE flu shots.
