I finally saw the new “Star Wars” movie in 3D.  This 3D technology has become so vivid and life like—all the trailers for the coming attractions, even the animated movies, were also in 3D.  Years ago, when I watched action/adventure movies like “Star Wars” and “Lord of the Rings”, it was exciting.  Now I feel like I am part of the action. Will the next type movie be “virtual” with vibrating chairs and surround sound as in the theme parks?  

Did you start cleaning out your basement and attic of old electronics for the electronic waste recycling event?  Don’t forget that you can drop off at the Sanitation Department’s site every Saturday and the last Friday of the month at 100 West Service Rd. from 10-5. 

If you have a child who was born in 2011, is eligible to attend kindergarten in September and currently lives in NYC, you must submit an application in order to receive a kindergarten placement.  Deadline for submitting applications is January 15.  Families can apply in one of three ways:

Is anyone else like me with these new-fangled baby and children's car seats?  How do you install?  How do you release?  My grandson imitated me for the longest time while I feverishly attempted to push the red release buttons, grunting all the way.  Not an easy undertaking!  Well, you can attend the FREE Car Seat Safety Check at RUMC, 355 Bard Ave. on Friday 1/15 where you will receive tips for the safe usage of children's car seats.  Call 212-839-4750 to register for an appointment between 9 and 11:30. 

Do you want to part with those old-fashioned things known as “books”?  I still read by holding the tome and turning pages by candlelight so don’t feel bad if you also still do so.  You can bring them to Clay Pit Pond State Park, 2351 Veteran’s Rd. West on Saturday, 1/16 from 9-4.  All ages and levels of books are accepted. 

On Saturday at 2, Staten Island OutLOUD invites you to explore a mysterious short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald, "The Ice Palace" about a young woman from the deep South who travels north one winter to meet her fiancé's family.  This event is good for adults and young readers ages 10 and older. There will also be a book giveaway while supplies last. As the weather becomes brisk, the best place to spend an evening is at the Tavern Concerts at Historic Richmond Town which began last weekend and continue through April 2. You will enjoy musicians performing blues, folk, sea shanties and rock at this vintage tavern, warm yourself at the wood-burning stove, drink mugs of cider, wine or beer as you share seating with your friends and perhaps make new ones. The Noble Maritime Collection concert begins this Sunday, 1/17 from 2-5 at Snug Harbor Cultural Center, 1000 Richmond Terr.  Musicians and singers from the metropolitan area converge for Sea Shanty Sessions.  A fun afternoon event for all ages!  Bring an instrument or just yourself and sing along.  Admission is FREE but donations are appreciated.

The Dinosaur Skull Replica Exhibit continues at the Richmondtown Public Library, 200 Clark Ave.  You will see twenty skulls altogether--Triceratops, T-Rex and others during regular Library hours.  Bring your dinosaur-loving children! 

Our Borough President, James Oddo is hosting his third annual OPEN HOUSE at Borough Hall on Sunday, 1/31 from noon to 3 for “Direct Connect Sunday” where a detailed display about projects and initiatives rolled out during 2015 as well as the 2016 agenda will be presented.  All Islanders are invited to attend; no registration is needed.  I attended the first Open House in 2014 which BP Oddo had in lieu of a traditional swearing-in ceremony.  It was a great opportunity for us to meet our new BP who made us feel right at home.  We viewed the wonderful murals throughout Borough Hall, enjoyed refreshments, toured his offices, chatted with the BP and his staff and had an enjoyable afternoon.  “Up close and personal” is how I describe BP Oddo.  Don’t miss his Open House!
