WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (12/31 – 1/3/16)

I hope your holidays were happy, fun and blessed. I was fortunate to have been surrounded with family and friends for a week before Christmas and afterwards, made some new friends, Annette and Fr. John, and met my old friend, Pat, from Roanoke, VA enjoying a five-hour chat fest with her. It was a very special holiday season.

So now, as I write this on the Eve of the New Year 2016, I wonder if this year, instead of resolutions, I should jot down “goals”. Every year, the diet and exercise is a given. In 2016, let me begin with “patience”. I sometimes become irritable because things don’t always seem to go the way I imagine they would. Do any of you, my gentle readers, identify with me? My goal is to count to ten or bite my tongue when someone says or does something not to my liking. I’m sure a few additional goals will be written on a post-it attached to my computer. Would any of you like to share your "goals"?

Below are photos of my church, St. Stanislaus Kostka, that were also published in the Staten Island Advance. Our pastor, Fr. Jacek Wozny, transformed the altar into what I imagine is the little town of Bethlehem. So artistic, so beautiful!

If you are still looking for a place to ring in the New Year, you might want to attend the celebration at my friend Larry Liedy’s Shore Inn. There will be a free buffet, no cover change, live entertainment and a toast at midnight at 748 Richmond Terr.

The 120 Bay Café will have the band Outshine playing. It’s $10 to get in after 9 and there will be festivites all night long.

You can, of course, go to the movies to see “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, “Creed” (loved it!), “The Danish Girl” or “The Hateful Eight”. I immensely enjoyed “In the Heart of the Sea”. It was intense (I did get a bit seasick watching the storm scenes of the ocean) but well done!

Staying at home, watching the ball drop at midnight (or ordering pizza and banging pots and pans like I did tonight with the kiddies) is also enjoyable. You beat the crowds, wake up early in the morning and are ready to face the New Year.

Friday, 1/1/16, at 1, meet at Clay Pit Pond State Park, 2351 Veterans Rd. West for a First Day Hike—2 miles of trails. Dress for the weather; wear boots.

Don't miss the Dinosaur Skull Replica Exhibit on Friday at the Richmondtown Public Library, 200 Clarke Ave. You will see 20 skulls altogether--Triceratops, T-Rex and others during regular library hours.

Start the New Year off right at Open Yoga on Friday from 7:30-8:30 at All Saints Episcopal Church, 2329 Victory Blvd. Call 718-698-1338 for more info.

Attend the Staten Island Creative Community Member Show, Friday at 776 Richmond Terr. Hours are 2-8 on Thursdays and Fridays, 12-6 on Saturdays and Sundays. Visit http://sicreative.org for info.

How do you get rid of old electronics? The Sanitation Department has a waste drop-off at 1000 West Service Rd.. in Travis at the foot of Muldoon Ave. off the Muldoon Ave. exit of the West Shore Expressway. The site will be open every Saturday and on the last Friday of the month from 10-5. Year- round disposal can be done at any Goodwill, Staples, Best Buy or Salvation Army. On Saturday, 1/9, the College of Staten Island, 2800 Victory Blvd., Parking Lot 6, will host an electronic waste recycling event from 10-4. Thanks for the tip about the electronic disposal. I have an old computer and monitor in my mother's basement that I never knew where to dump. I know those things have dangerous chemicals on the circuit boards that wouldn't be good for the environment when they begin to degrade.
