Did you enjoy the Tree Lightings at Borough Hall, the Conference House or elsewhere or attend Christmas shows or Fairs?  Below are some photos from various Fairs I attended.  Check out the "Pennies for Pilgrims"! The Youth Group of Christ Church of New Brighton are raising money to make a pilgrimage to the shrine of St. Joan of Arc in France.  They hand made all of the items for sale at their table including beautiful earrings, knitted/crocheted scarves, hats and animal toys. 

 

How about the City of Science: Staten Island, last Sunday at the South Shore YMCA?  One of my gentle readers told me his family enjoyed the science exhibits including the human brain, sheep brain, robotics demos and more and shared photos from this awe-inspiring event. 

The holidays should be joyous. . .Try to remember those who are home bound or in nursing homes, who need a visit to make their day brighter.  It is that time of year when we start gathering to sing carols at nursing homes.  If you know of a group that needs singers, please share.  I’m sure some of my gentle readers would love to join. 

Please visit the Christmas Wonderland display at 107 Sharrotts Rd. between Bloomingdale Rd. and Arthur Kill Rd. this season.  This wonderful interactive “event” was created 15 years ago by Joseph DiMartino in memory of his wife, Debra Ann, a victim of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack at the World Trade Center.  Each year, he raises thousands of dollars for the Nalitt Institute's Outpatient Children's Cancer Unit at Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze in the name of his late wife.  The lights will be on daily from 5-11.  Santa Claus will make special appearances 12/9-11 and 12/16-18, from 7 to 8 p.m. Below are photos from last year.

 

 

 

 

 

Participate in a Bird and Nature Walk at Wolf’s Pond Park, Hylan Boulevard and Cornelia Ave on Wednesday, 12/7 from 10-12.  The group will be searching for migrating waterfowl on the pond and in Raritan Bay. The SIUH Northwell Health Medical Van will visit Mt. Sinai United Christian Church, 382 Jersey St. on Thursday at 10 for FREE blood pressure screenings and body mass index for stroke prevention including information on healthy living, healthy aging.

Dress like your favorite Harry Potter character, wear your holiday best or come as you are and join other fans for dancing, music, activities and giveaways at the Harry Potter Magical Holiday Ball on Friday, 12/9 at 7 at Barnes and Noble Bookstore, 2245 Richmond Ave.  For info, call 718-982-6983. 

Make it a point to attend a FREE Family Event--The Live Nativity at Salem Church, 634 Clove Rd. on Friday, 12/9, Saturday, 12/10 and Sunday 12/11 from 6-9.  Reenactment of the Nativity by youth of the church, live animals, singing Christmas carols, cookies and hot chocolate are something you should not miss!

Join Urby Staten Island, 7 Navy Pier Ct., for its First Annual Holiday Market, featuring more than 10 local businesses selling a mix of eclectic home items, handmade goods, clothing and accessories, delicious food, drinks and more on Saturday, 12/10 from 11-5. Attend a Holiday Dance Concert with dancers performing works based on American music, European classical music and Mexican folk music on Saturday, 12/10 at 2 at the Staten Island Museum at Snug Harbor, 1000 Richmond Terr., Bldg. The New Dorp Christmas Tree Lighting and Street Festival will be on Saturday from 4-6 at Crossroads Church, 168 New Dorp Ln.  New Dorp Ln. will be closed off to traffic and the event will take place between New Dorp Plaza and 9th St.  Families can take pictures with Santa Claus and ride on the holiday train while enjoying an afternoon of live performances, special appearances and much more. Attend Christmas Vespers on Saturday at 7:30 at New Dorp Moravian Church, 2205 Richmond Rd. Sing Christmas carols and share a simple fellowship meal of juice and buns. Join Mount Loretto and Sponsor, Shop Rite for the Second Annual Christmas at The Mount Event on Saturday, 12/10 from 4-10 and Sunday, 12/11 from 3-9. This year’s event will feature rides for the kids, photos with Santa, DJ, lighting of our Christmas tree, LED light show on our churches facade, vendors, food and more! Attend the 6th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at Angelina’s Ristorante, 399 Ellis St., on Sunday from 2-5 with DJ entertainment, musical performances, free giveaways, raffles, visit with Santa, and much more.  Please bring an unwrapped toy for Toys for Tots. 

The 2nd Annual Dongan Hills Christmas Tree Lighting Festival will be held on Sunday from 3-5 at the Santander Bank parking lot located at 1630 Richmond Rd. Families can take pictures with Santa Claus and ride on the holiday train, all while enjoying an afternoon of live performances, special appearances and more.  Participate in raffles, donate Christmas presents and enjoy local food & drink.

On Sunday at 4 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 309 St. Pauls Ave., enjoy the Holiday Concert—Mystery and Merriment that explores many of the dimensions of Advent, Christmas and Chanukah, from mysteries of the Annunciation and Mary’s response, the birth in the stable, through the particular ardor of Marian worship to the joyous proclamations of good news and of course, the food and the festivities.
