While I had an absolutely perfect time hanging out with my grandson for four days last week, playing games, putting together puzzles, working on arts and crafts projects, laughing and teasing each other, I welcomed the arrival Saturday morning of my second grandchild--a perfect little girl.  Even the snow fall throughout this week couldn’t put a damper on my spirit!

What did you do last weekend?  Did you check in at your nearest New York Public Library?  Did you go on a nature hike with your children or friends?  Or did you attend the weekly Wine Tasting at Jean’s Fine Wines?  I received a couple of comments about Edith Susskind, her store and her presence on Forest Ave.  Patrick noted:  “Edith Susskind was an Island institution--Forest Ave. has never been the same since her shop closed.”  Ann Marie commented:  “I remember [Edith] and her shop.  She was sparkle and bling.”  I fondly recall Edith always dolled up, even at the end.  Did you make it to the opening reception at the Staten Island Museum on Sunday of the exhibit: “Kaleidoscopic Porcelain:  From the Alfred & Edith Susskind Porcelain Collection”?

Do you have fond childhood memories?  Created by Melissa Sarris and organized by Melanie Cohn, “Drawing from Memory” asks strangers to connect over the phone by calling a toll-free number 1-888-375-3729 on Wednesdays, from 4:15 to 7:30, and telling a personal story of a childhood memory about “water”, “crossings”, “journeys” or “the city”.  The call is answered by an artist stationed in the Gallery space at the St. George Ferry Terminal, who will create a drawing to illustrate or respond to the story.  These spontaneous, instant connections, sketched in monochromatic colors by local artists will be on display through March 22 in the Culture Lounge.  Participants can take home the sketches of their memories, or have digital versions emailed to them.

Monday, 2/2, 6:30 a.m., come out to the Staten Island Zoo, 614 Broadway for Groundhog Day festivities.  Let’s see if Staten Island Chuck the Groundhog will predict six more weeks of winter or an early spring.  Admission to the ceremony is FREE.

Enjoy your weekend and the week ahead.  Try to get out of the house, bundle up, shovel some snow and breathe that fresh winter air.  I’m predicting an early spring.  What do you think?  If you want to share your plans for the weekend, please call me at 646-258-9696 or write a comment below or to joan.coogan@gmail.com
