WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (2/10 – 2/14/16)

Were you able to stop at the NYPD “Crime Prevention” Table at the Staten Island Ferry Terminal this week? I constantly read about incidents where a person leaves his/her key in their car--running no less, sometimes with a child strapped in the baby seat, to quickly run into a deli to buy a lottery ticket/newspaper/coffee. When the person returns, the car is gone! Is this shocking to you? You bet! Last week, I noticed an upscale red car parked in front of my house with the front window open on the passenger side. All day, I checked to see if the car was still there and if the window had been closed. The driver must have been distracted or maybe a passenger had left it open. I actually worried because I felt I had some responsibility to find the driver. Most people who park here work at the school or nursing home nearby. At 3:30, the car was gone. I have seen it parked on other days. I assume everything was in order when the owner returned. Word to the wise—Don’t leave your car door open, your windows, your house or apartment open. You are inviting people to “visit” you but not in the way you would prefer.

One more time to remind you to register your child (born in 2012) for New York City’s FREE all-day universal pre-kindergarten program. The deadline to apply is March 4. You can apply online at www.nyc.gov/prek by calling 311 or in person at the District 31 Family Welcome Center located at the Petrides School. “Pre-K For All” runs five days a week from September to June in District 31 public schools as well as at most Catholic schools and other community sites.

Tonight, Wednesday at 7, attend FREE Tai Chi classes with Master Sal Giglio at Kick Boxing, Tai Kwon Do and Tai Chi Chaun Center, 11 Sylvia St.

A very enjoyable night out of line dancing can be had tonight at 7:30 at Christ Methodist Church, 1890 Forest Ave. For $8/person, you can dance all night (beginners to intermediate dancers are welcomed), make new friends and leave with a smile on your face. Go Red for Women: Heart Stoppers takes place tonight from 5-9 at the Regina McGinn Education Center, 475 Seaview Ave. Enjoy a selection of heart-healthy snacks. All attendees will be entered into a free raffle for a chance to win one of many door prizes.

On Friday, 2/12 at 7:30, the Staten Island Geological Society, Inc. will feature a video presentation on “The Eruption of the Krakatau Volcano, 1883” at St. Clare’s Church, 151 Lindenwood Rd. The Zimmer Club Annual Free Youth Conservation Program for boys and girls 10-17, takes place on Saturday at 9:15. Your children will be introduced to activities that bring conservation topics to life such as environmental conservation, estuary systems, Blue and Greenbelt management, hunting, fishing (both salt and fresh-water), boating, first aid, camping, gun safety, archery, marksmanship, and how to use a compass and read a map.
