YES, SPRING IS ON ITS WAY!  We have had ice, sleet, snow the last couple of days and weeks but also weather in the high 40’s.  Not your typical winter, I know, but it gives us some hope of warmth in the near future.  Of course, the other surprise was a quick snow storm which gave my grandkiddies a chance to shovel snow with their Dad and build a snowman.  See also the photos of the crocuses popping up all over and other signs of spring. 

Ladders for Leaders is a nationally recognized program that offers high school and college students the opportunity to participate in paid professional summer internships with leading corporations, non-profit organizations and government agencies in New York City. The “Mommy and Me”, “Daddy and Me” or “My Favorite Adult and Me” Staten Island Zoo Cub Club program begins Wednesday 2/27 from 11-12:30 and has six sessions available to register for. Each session is a different topic but follows a similar format that your child will love. You can register for as many sessions as you would like, but there is a 15% discount if you register for all six sessions. The Zoo is located at 614 Broadway. On Wednesday from 1:303:30, become more familiar with various areas of the Greenbelt and Staten Island Parks as you participate in an Adult Afternoon Hike at Southwest LaTourette (end of Old Mill Rd.) while enjoying picturesque views and discovering unique features. The length of the hike will be determined by the pace of the group.  Meet at LaTourette Golf Course Clubhouse, 1001 Richmond Hill Rd.  

The Family Association Meeting takes place on Wednesday, 2/27 from 7-8:30 at the YMCA-South Shore, 3939 Richmond Ave. and is geared to family members who are dealing with a loved one struggling with substance use.

Teens: Come with your friends to honor and celebrate the life of Rosa Parks and the Fight for Civil Rights: Mosaic Making Workshop on Thursday, 2/28 at 4 at the West New Brighton Library, 976 Castleton Ave. Using online educational resources, you will learn about Mrs. Park's life and legacy, as well as about the Civil Rights Movement. You will also work together on a collaborative mosaic poster of Mrs. Parks to be displayed in our teen room.

Come in to the Stapleton Library, Community Room, 132 Canal St. for a Free Computer Classes-Open Lab on Thursday, 2/28 from 2-4 to get answers to questions you have about using your computer, laptop,  cell phone, or tablet. Laptops will be provided for participants. 

IT'S JEOPARDY!!!!!!  For teens 13-18 years, come to the Stapleton Library, 132 Canal St., Community Room on Thursday, 2/28 at 4 and show us that Jeopardy isn't just for adults. It’s Teen Jeopardy!

On Thursday 2/28 from 7-9, Everything Goes Café, 208 Bay St. hosts a Show and Tell Comedy Show with Nanci Richards, Staten Island's own Susan Golden, Randy Kaplan and other surprises. This is the first in a new series of comedic entertainment on the Neighborhood Stage. $5 suggested donation.

Bring your children ages 18 mos.-3 years old to the Tottenville Library, 7430 Amboy Rd. on Friday 3/1 at 10:15 for Toddler Storytime and Toddler Time stories, songs, crafts and fun. Meet other toddlers in the neighborhood!

Attend a FREE Robotic Demonstration with St. Joseph by the Sea Robotics Squad on Saturday 3/2 at 9 at the Zimmer Club, 4411 Arthur Kill Rd.  

Spark a conversation about one of the oldest inventions in the hands-on All Kids Workshop--Clock Tray on Saturday 3/2 from 9-12 at all Staten Island Home Depot locations. Together you and your timekeeper can build a freestanding clock with easy-to-read numbers, movable hands and a storage tray to house reminders or important trinkets. Use as a learning clock to make telling time fun or as a tool to encourage the value of time. Once your clock is built, your child can customize it with paint and stickers. Attendees must be accompanied by a parent or adult at all times. Celebrate the end of maple season with a Pancake Breakfast on Saturday 3/2 from 10-12 at Clay Pit Ponds Visitors Center, 2351 Veterans Rd. W.  All ages welcome. Tickets may be purchased at the Nature Interpretive Center during our open hours until March 1. Admission is $5 cash or check.

Kids 6+ can enjoy making painted rocks at Kids Club Painted Rock Friends on Saturday 3/2 from 10-12 for a $5 fee at all Michael's Craft Store locations. Staten Island OutLOUD hosts a spoken word performance "How the Other Half Lives" with music by Elle La Forge, Rob Landsman and Rich Barbera, inspired by Jacob Riss’ pioneering journalism on Saturday, 3/2 at 8 at Everything Goes Book Cafe & Neighborhood Stage, 208 Bay St.

The 55th annual Staten Island St. Patrick’s Day Parade will step off on Sunday, 3/3 at 12:30 at Forest Ave. and Hart Blvd., led by Grand Marshal Jack King, with son, Sean King, serving as aide to the Grand Marshal. Attend the Living with Deer Information Session on Sunday 3/3 from 1-2 at the Greenbelt Nature Center, 700 Rockland Ave.  Join the Urban Park Rangers as you hike outdoors to learn about and find signs of deer in the park (buck rubs, deer scat, deer prints, chewed twigs), and learn five tips to follow to promote a healthy coexistence with these animals.
