WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (2/3 – 2/7/16)

Are you sad to see the snow melt? It’s hard to believe that just a week ago I wrote about the major blizzard and trying to find help with shoveling driveways and clearing sidewalks. My grandson visited commenting that he hadn’t even had a chance to walk in the snow. Well, his Dad put his boots on and out in the yard they trudged, throwing snowballs and building a snowman. It was a pleasure watching them have so much fun in just an hour. Alas! See below the melting snowman a few days later. Yippee! Here comes Spring!

How many of you attended the Art shows at the Garibaldi-Meucci Museum, Wagner College and/or St. George Theater? I went to the opening reception for the exhibit "Photographs and Prints by Vincent Verdi and Ann Marie McDonnell" on Saturday and met the talented artists and gracious hosts, Vincent and Ann Marie. Below are some photos from the Exhibit which continues till through 4/30. Museum hours are 1-5 Wednesday through Sunday.

The Kristi Pfister's 'Sweetgum' exhibit was also last Saturday at the Wagner College Gallery, 631 Howard Ave. and will continue through 2/27. One of my gentle readers, Diane, shared that she gave it her best through the snow-covered trails during the Protectors of Pine Oaks Winter 10-Mile Greenbelt Walk last Saturday. She commented what a beautiful day it was in the woods and also recommended the smaller hikes on weekends (which are probably doable for neophytes like me). Have any of you hiked this winter?

If you have read my blog, you will know I am a fan of the New York Public Library. Do you read aloud to your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews? My favorite moments are having a young‘un sitting on my lap and reading to him/her. My grandson has been reading to me for quite awhile but still asks, “Grandma, can you read this book to me?” I think he enjoys the intimate hug he gets when we share the book. Bring your children 3 years and up to Picture Book/Read Aloud Time today, Wednesday, 2/3 at 4 at the New Dorp Library, 309 New Dorp Ln. Have you gotten into an exercise routine yet? The Tavern Concerts at Historic Richmond Town, 441 Clarke Ave., continue with Mara Levine and Caroline Cutroneo and the Celestial Harmonies this Saturday with a show at 6 and another at 8. Staten Island OutLOUD kicks off Black History Month on Saturday at 2 at the Stapleton Library, 132 Canal St. featuring a new biography, Richmond Unchained, about the first Black sports superstar, the boxer Bill Richmond, born in slavery on Staten Island in 1763. He won his freedom as a boy and moved to England to learn the cabinet-making trade. A favorite of some powerful British aristocrats, Richmond became one of the most celebrated bare-knuckle boxers of his time.

The Zimmer Club Annual Free Youth Conservation Program for boys and girls 10-17, takes place on Saturday at 9:15. Your children will be introduced to activities that bring conservation topics to life such as environmental conservation, estuary systems, Blue and Greenbelt management, hunting, fishing (both salt and fresh-water), boating, first aid, camping, gun safety, archery, marksmanship, and how to use a compass and read a map. Have you visited the NYPD “Crime Prevention” table at the St. George Ferry Terminal. To kick off crime-prevention awareness week, the NYPD are handing out materials designed to help inform people about crime prevention. Learn about NYPD’s Law Enforcement Explorer Program which allows NYC youth to explore potential careers in law enforcement. You can register your cell phone with the NYPD and be taught various security features. Our men and women in blue will be available through Sunday, 2/7.

If you have a child who was born in 2012 and who lives in New York City, you can begin to register for New York City’s FREE all-day universal pre-kindgarten program. The deadline to apply is March 4. You can apply online at www.nyc.gov/prek by calling 311 or in person at the District 31 Family Welcome Center located at the Petrides School. “Pre-K For All” runs five days a week from September to June in District 31 public schools as well as at most Catholic schools and other community sites.
