On Saturday, I attended the book signing of “The Dimension Travel Trilogy”, met the young author, Joseph S. Fleet Week 2016 begins today, Wednesday, at 8 a.m.  You can watch the parade of ships from the Alice Austen House Museum grounds at 2 Hylan Blvd., with Fred Rodriguez, a maritime historian, narrating.  Free coffee and donuts will be available. Participate in a Bird and Nature Walk at Great Kills Park today from 3:30 - 5:30 at Buffalo St. and Hylan Blvd.  This walk is timed to catch the outgoing tide (low tide is 5:20 pm) to increase the chance of seeing a variety of shore birds and waders. Do you want to be involved in your neighborhood?  Join a Civic or Block Association!  Or attend the Precinct Community Council meeting.  The 120th Community Council meets the 4th Wednesday of every month. The 122 Precinct Community Council meets tonight (and the 3rd Wednesday of the month) at 8:00 p.m. at the 122nd Precinct Stationhouse, 2320 Hylan Blvd.  The Council provides the critical interface between the citizen and the police through the regular monthly meetings. The Annual Neighborhood Remembrance Day Celebration will be on Saturday, 5/28 at 2:00 at the Historic Lake Cemetery, 1668 Forest Ave. (corner of Forest Ave. and Willowbrook Rd.) This celebration honors the role of Staten Island Women in war time, active service, nurses, auxiliary and Gold Star mothers. It will also feature GAR Post 524 Civil War reenactors with Cannon Brigade, US Navy Bugler, Chaplain and active service members and Staten Island Fleet Week servicemen and women. On Sunday, 5/29 at 1, join naturalist Paul T. Lederer in a talk and walk at Crooke’s Point where he will discuss the geology and human history of the site as well as the plants and animals that call this place home. Meet at the Beach Center Parking Lot in Great Kills Park, near the dirt road leading out to Crooke’s Point. The 97th Annual Memorial Day Parade kicks off at Hart Blvd. and proceeds to Hamlin Ave. in Port Richmond on Monday, 5/30 beginning at Noon.  Service members will participate in the annual parade as well as bands and organizations throughout the Island.  Come show your support to our servicemen and women and those marching in memory of our Fallen Heroes!
