I attended the workshop at the Joe Holzka Community Garden on Castleton Ave. and Barker St. which was hosted by the Parks Dept. and attended by people from community and personal gardens.  It was very informative describing all kinds of pests such as aphids, whiteflies, slugs and simple organic methods for dealing with them.  One gardener brought two Praying Mantis Egg Cases which was then hung on one of the trees.  Just picture this!  When the babies are ready to hatch, they drop down into the garden and feed on all of the bad pests.  One gardener described his method of ridding the pests which includes tobacco, oil and liquid soap.  We were taught various methods to improve our crops and flowers.  I shared the book and handouts with my grandson; we both agreed we would start a Garden Log this year to document where and what we are planting, how successful the crops are and steps needed for improvement going forward. 

The Mobile Market of City Harvest is held twice a month year-round and provides free fruits, vegetables and recipes.  The Mobile Market is held every 1st Wednesday and 3rd Saturday in front of the Senior Center at 22 Roxbury St. from 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. on the following dates:

May 3 and 20, June 7 and 17.

Help Build Up the Callaloo Patch Community Garden, 334 York Ave. on Saturday from 2-4 with hands-on creations of bird feeders and bird houses.
