WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (6/15 - 6/19/16)

On Saturday, I attended the Mass to celebrate the feast day of St. Anthony at the very beautiful St. Anthony of Padua Church in Travis. Some of my gentle readers were in attendance, and I made some new friends. The special "St. Anthony's Bread" was distributed during the service and also to the neighbors along the streets. A band played music through the Travis neighborhood after the celebration as the procession was led by parishioners holding the photo of St. Anthony and others carrying a large statue of St. Anthony draped in dollar bills. The good parishioners hosted a reception thereafter while the band entertained us all.

Participate in a Bird and Nature Walk on Wednesday, 6/15 from 10-12 at the Mt. Loretto Unique Area, 6450 Hylan Blvd. Search for nesting Baltimore and orchard orioles, indigo buntings and others as you walk along the open fields and meadows of Mt. Loretto. The Summer Reading Kick-Off Celebration takes place on Thursday, 6/16 at 4:00 at the New Dorp Library, 309 New Dorp Ln. for ages 3 and up. Come to the library for the kickoff celebration with story time and give-aways. Enjoy a musical and fun show with Bubbles the Clown. Call 718-351-2977 for info.

On Friday at 7, the Staten Island Arts Summerfest presents the first every “Bueno Cruise”. Gather at the Staten Island Ferry Terminal for a free ride that will include a small catering of local salumeria staples and home cooked Italian food FREE of charge, plus a cruise comedian. The cruise will pick up passengers on both the Staten Island and Manhattan sides and ride back and forth several times.

On Saturday from noon to 3, join Kayak Staten Island at South Beach on the north end of the boardwalk at Ocean Ave. They will provide the paddles, sit-on-top kayaks, vests and paddling tips from experts and a shove into the waters off South Beach. Visit KayakStatenIsland.org for more info.

The Sandy Ground Festival takes place on Saturday from 1-6 at 1538 Woodrow Rd. and features history, art, music and dinner including everything from collard greens and dirty rice to potato salad and string beans. The music and camaraderie is FREE of charge. If you have never been to Sandy Ground or toured their museum, don’t miss it this year. The secret special sauce on those ribs is to die for. The City Harvest Mobile Market is held twice a month at Mariner’s Harbor in the basketball court in front of the Senior Center at 22 Roxbury St. and at Stapleton in the tennis courts at the Stapleton Houses behind 75 Hill St. from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. At Mariner’s Harbor and Stapleton, the Mobile Market will be at both locations on Saturday.

Don’t miss the Staten Island Shakespearean Theatre presentation of “Midsummer Night’s Dream” in the Greenbelt with original music. Shows are Saturday and Sunday at 3 at High Rock Park Amphitheater in the Greenbelt, 200 Nevada Ave. and are FREE to the public.

Join the New York Road Runner’s Open Runs on 6/19 and 6/26 at the Conference House Visitor Center at 9 a.m. and 6/21, 28 at the Lake Bridge, down the hill from the intersection of Victory Blvd. and Eddy St. at 7 p.m. Participants are encouraged to arrive 15 minutes from the start of the run. Open to all ages, walkers, strollers and dogs—all are welcome

You will want to attend the Sunday Boardwalk Concerts this Sunday, 6/19 from 4-8 at the Boardwalk Café, 300 Capodanno Blvd. From country to classic rock, jazz to show tunes, an Elvis Extravaganza to a rocking Bruce Springsteen tribute band, the musical lineup offers something for everyone. Bring a beach chair or spread a blanket out on the beach to enjoy the breezes and music. Visit www.boardwalkdays.com for a list of future performances.

A screening of the Documentary: The Last Horse Caravan will be on Sunday at 2 at the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art, 338 Lighthouse Ave. This film follows one of the last Tibetan trade caravans through the Three Parallel Rivers region of eastern Tibet's sacred mount Kawa Karpo. If your children in grades 6-9 are looking for activities in the summer, check this out! Science , technology, engineering and math (STEM) Summer in the City program will provide your child with an engaging and fun summer experience featuring hands-on learning around STEM subjects. The program runs from 7/7 thru 8/11, Monday-Thursday, 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Girls are strongly encouraged to apply. Deadline has been extended to Friday 6/10.
