The Annual Conference on Aging last Friday at the Joan & Alan Bernikow JCC was informative and helpful. Sessions on physical, emotional, creative, cognitive and long-term wellness, as well as sessions aimed to combat memory loss and even tap dancing, were held. Free hearing, vision and BMI screenings were performed by medical professionals. We enjoyed a healthy lunch with the chorus and the band entertaining the crowd.
Did you display your American flag on Flag Day? In my travels throughout the Island, I noticed that of the flags displayed a third of them were in poor condition and should be retired. To learn of the correct way to display your flag and to properly retire the flag, visit http://www.usflag.org/flagetiquette.html The American flag should be taken in each day at sunset and returned to be displayed at sun up. My non-scientific poll led to the following conclusion: The most patriotic neighborhood in Staten Island is West Brighton above Forest Ave. More houses display their flags on Morrison Ave. and Harvest Ave. than in any other neighborhood I have seen with Travis being a close second! Send your teens ages 13-18 to Name Mandalas, presented by Community Word Project, on Wednesday at 3:30 at the Richmondtown Library, 200 Clarke Ave. Participants will create a colorful mandala vision using the letters and shapes of their name. All materials will be provided and each participant will have their own personalized mandala to take home!
Children ages 5+ can participate in Misterios de la Máscara: Lucha Libre Mask Making, presented by Urban Stages, on Wednesday 6/19 at 4 at the Stapleton Library, 132 Canal St. Have you ever wondered what it was like to be a luchador? Join the Library staff for a brand-new mask making workshop where you jump into the world of Lucha Libre. Come learn about the history of Mexican wrestling through storytelling while creating our own unique máscaras (masks).
The Summer Reading Kick-Off: The Universe takes place on Wednesday at 4 at the Tottenville Library, 7430 Amboy Rd. You will explore the universe; every song, beginning with our introduction “Hello Song” will be altered to include a mention of galaxies, stars, the sun, moon and planets. During our Adventure song you will visit the milky way, visit Martians, see satellites and spaceships. Best for ages 0-8 years old with their parent/caregiver.
Attend the Summer Reading Kick-Off: Mutt-i-grees on Thursday 6/20 at 3:30 at the South Beach Library, 21-25 Robin Rd. The North Shore Animal League brings in a shelter animal to show the wonders of empathy. Working together to create an adoption poster, you will help an animal to find a forever home. This is a great resource for families who want their children to grow up to be caring and compassionate. The program will also include a guideline for parents/guardians on how to enhance your child’s social emotional skill, increase their ability to communicate and manage emotions, foster empathy bridged with humane education. You will be briefed on Animal League America, which is the world’s largest no-kill adoption shelter and the origin of the word Mutt-i-gree. This program is open to all ages.

"Staten Island Remembers", a memorial event to honor NYPD fallen officers, will be held on Sunday at noon in front of the NYPD's 121st Precinct on Richmond Ave. in Graniteville. The NYPD Honor Guard will pay tribute to the fallen heroes and their families and a bell will ring for each officer after their name is read. After a moment of silence, families will have the opportunity to speak about their loved ones.
