I joined my grandkiddies at the Summer Reading Kick-Off: The Universe on Wednesday at 4 at the Tottenville Library which was decorated with everything “Universe”. Even the fabulous Library staff were sporting Martian ears!
Entertainment was provided by an animated musician from Rockness Music who drew the children into the performance by singing about space, robots and Martians--they laughed, sang, danced, jumped up and down and enjoyed an afternoon that ended with giveaways and popsicles. The children had lots of fun as evidenced by the photos.
Sunday was the most relaxing afternoon I have had in a long time at the Annual White Party Fundraiser hosted by the Friends of Seguine Mansion and George Burke. The mansion is stunning inside and out with peacocks roaming around the grounds and mingling with the guests. Seeing everyone dressed in white--women in beautiful hats and men in white suits, was stunning. The afternoon garden party took me back to a quieter, more peaceful time as we soaked up the warm weather, cool breezes underneath the trees, chatting, sipping, and therapeutic, if only for a day! A classical guitarist provided music from the porch as we mingled and enjoyed sangria, iced tea and a fine luncheon and later on, coffee and desserts.
On Sunday, Virginia Sherry, founder of the Native Plant Society of Staten Island, opened up her yard and garden to “Our Second Plant Swap". It was a great gathering with fellow plant and flower lovers sharing clippings and starter plants as well as hints and stories about how to better grow your garden with native plants, shrubs and trees. Bring your children for an afternoon of fun on Wednesday from 2-6 for the Summer Reading Kick Off at the St. George Library, 5 Central Ave. Beginning at 2, you will celebrate the end of school, the kickoff of summer and St. George Library’s Birthday with reading with games, activities, refreshments and giveaways. At 3, join in the fun with Tommy and Tommy Juggling Time. They will perform for you, and then spend some time teaching you to juggle together. The session includes a juggling ball-making workshop; you can take home what you make. If you have ever wanted to step right up and join the circus, now’s your chance! Best for ages 4+. Children are also invited to participate in a STEAM activity related to our Blast Off! Summer Reading theme. We will also share readings appropriate for all ages. Bike, run, walk or birdwatch during Freshkills Park Open Hours on Sunday 6/30 from 10-2, at Freshkills Park, 350 Wild Ave. Six miles of roads will be accessible for the event. Visitors can bring their own bikes or rent one for free. Staff and volunteers will be there to answer questions about the landfill-to-park project. For those who have attended Discovery Day in the past, Open Hours is something new. Access will be limited to the asphalt roadways around the mounds. Visitors must provide their own transportation or travel by public transit.

The 11th Annual Polish Festival takes place on Sunday from 12-8 at Snug Harbor Cultural Center, 1000 Richmond Terr. This festival is an undertaking of the Polish-American community of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church to acquaint the Staten Island community with Polish culture, music, traditions, arts, and crafts. The festival features live performances by singers and dance groups representing traditional music and dance as well as raffle drawings and basket prizes. To provide guests with a taste of Poland, traditional cuisine is served throughout the day including kielbasa, pierogi, golabki (stuffed cabbage), baked goods and Polish beer. There will be face painting, bounce houses and activities for the children and sporting contests. Admission is $10 which includes a raffle ticket; kids up to 12 are FREE.
