Did you attend the Staten Island New Teacher Job Fair at Petrides, Wine Tasting at Honor Wines at their new location at 104 Beach St., the Third Annual Greenbelt Outdoor Adventure Day at Willowbrook Park, Historian Pat Salmon’s talk and discussion about the history of The Oystermen of Captain's Row at The Noble Maritime Collection or the 52nd Annual Art Exhibit, presented by The South Shore Artist Group at Conference House Park or the Victory Boulevard Merchants Association’s Annual Restaurant and Merchant Stroll? So many things to do but so little time… I often say that, never the opposite--“I’m bored”. If we ever dared to utter those words, my parents would tell us, “Pick up a book and read!” Life can be exciting as you visit other places, other worlds or universes by simply reading a book. Would you care to share the title of the last book you read whether a golden oldie or newly published? Did you like it, hate it, were confused, bemused and why? It would be great to share your comments with my Gentle Readers.
Below are photos from the 52nd Annual Art Exhibit presented by the South Shore Artist Group. What a lovely afternoon of art, viewing the exhibit, mingling with the artists, meeting old friends, making new friends and arts and crafts for the kiddies! Rain was predicted for late afternoon, but it held out till the end of the show. A perfect spring day!

Spring migration is ending, and nesting has begun. On Wednesday 6/5 from 10-12, participate in a Bird and Nature Walk at Buck’s Hollow, searching for nesting chickadees, catbirds, woodpeckers, and others. Meet at the intersection of Manor Rd. and 700 Rockland Ave., near the DEP storm water management pond.
Join the Evening Group Hike on Wednesday from 6–7:45, covering 4-5 miles. There are some small climbs, but it's fairly easy. You will see parts of the Greenbelt and the trail system that you have never seen before! Dress for the weather and trail conditions. Proper footwear is essential. Bring water and a snack if you think you'll need it. Always check the Greenbelt Conservancy's Facebook page for updates on changes or cancellations. Meet at the Greenbelt Nature Center, 700 Rockland Ave. at Brielle Ave.
Attend World Oceans Day Talk on Wednesday from 6-8 at Ocean Breeze Track & Field Athletic Complex, 625 Father Capodanno Blvd. The cleaner ocean waters through the efforts of Federal, State and private agencies and organizations conversely have attracted a growing number of marine mammals and sea turtles to our nearby waters. You will hear about the important marine wildlife preservation and protection efforts the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society is conducting along our region’s most valuable natural resource.
On Thursday 6/6 at 1 at the Dongan Hills Library, 1617 Richmond Rd., explore the science involved in rocket construction at Summer Reading Kick-Off: Rocket Building as you build your own Skyblazer Rocket that you can take home! Best for children ages 5+. Presented by Mad Science.
Join CloseKnit, the longest-running public program, on Thursday from 2-4 at the Noble Maritime Collection, 1000 Richmond Terr. It is free and open to knitters of all skill levels. The goods members make are donated to community charities including The Seamen’s Church Institute’s Christmas at Sea program and the Elizabeth Coalition to House the Homeless.
Come to the Todt Hill-Westerleigh Library, 2550 Victory Blvd. on Thursday at 4 for Family Story Time told by your favorite librarians! All ages are welcomed.
On Friday 6/7 at 3, the Summer Reading Kick-Off: Tommy and Tommy Juggling Time will be at the Great Kills Library, 56 Giffords Ln. They will perform for you and you will spend some time learning how to juggle together. This session includes a juggling ball-making workshop which you can take home. If you've ever wanted to step right up and join the circus, now's your chance! Best for ages 10-18. Presented by Urban Stages.
Spend a fun evening with your child creating a piece of art at Parent & Me Paint Night on Friday, from 6-8 at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex, 625 Father Capodanno Blvd. All parent/child teams will create a canvas painting to take home. Meet your friends at the Tavern Terrace Outdoor Concert Series on Friday from 6–11 at Historic Richmond Town, 441 Clarke Ave. Staten Island’s biggest backyard barbecue returns for another fun-filled season at Historic Richmond Town’s Main Village site. The Tavern Terrace Beer Garden features a selection of hand-crafted ales and lagers from Staten Island's famed Flagship Brewery, and delectable smoked classics from Corner House BBQ.
