The 4th of July came and the humidity felt worse than ever.  People were complaining in the air conditioned mall and everywhere I went how humid it was outside!  What?!  I enjoyed the cool evening on my front porch and played Scrabble a number of times while chilling out. The Staten Island Philharmonic entertained at Alice Austen House on the 4th and at Willowbrook Park on the 7th.  The Borough President’s FREE Sunset Summer Concert Series at Midland Beach, featuring Brother Dynamite and The Resistance, was a great evening of entertainment with the cool sea air. Did you try kayaking with Kayak Staten Island at Conference House Park on Sunday? There are plenty of ways to stay cool without air conditioning. I actually worked on my garden a few late afternoons.  If you don’t think about it and do something fun instead, you will feel OK.  Try it!

Did you sign up for the Go!Healthy box last Friday?  The first pick-up was Tuesday.  Below is a photo of the bounty we received yesterday with staff handing out samples of recipe for Gingered Beet and Carrot Slaw.  If you didn’t read my blog last week, following is the info.  Purchase a food box at Goodhue Center, 304 Prospect Ave. Tuesdays between 4-6.  You must sign up a week in advance.  The Summer session runs from 7/10-8/14, the Fall session runs from 9/11-11/13.  Each box costs $10 or $8 if you pay using EBT.  Cash, Credit/Debit, EBT and Health Bucks are accepted! 


Wonderful Wednesdays at the Carousel for All Children is back today 7/11 through 8/8 at Willowbrook Park, 1 Eton Pl. beginning at 10 a.m.  The Greenbelt’s early childhood educators will lead a nature activity and speak about upcoming programs through the summer and fall. Bring the kiddies to the Meadow at the corner of Cedar Grove Ct. & Cedar Grove Ave. for a morning with NYC PlayMobile on Wednesday from 11-1.  The NYC Recreation personnel will bring a variety of activities to entertain the kids.

The 4th Annual Cops vs. Kids Chess & Checker Tournament is Wednesday beginning at 11 at the NYPD 120th Precinct, 78 Richmond Terr.  Trophies will be awarded.  Snacks and drinks will be provided.  Register your children at Eventbrite for FREE tickets.

Have you been to Boogie Woogie Wednesdays at 5 at the Children’s Museum, 1000 Richmond Terr.?  Storytime and crafts begin at 5:30, snacks at 6:30 and dancing kicks of at 7 for all ages.

Another way to stay cool is to attend the weekly Wednesday Night Summer Concert Series from 7-9 at Westerleigh Park,  160 Neal Dow Ave.  This week features Lisa Scherma & Guy Michetti and All Hands on Deck.

On Thursday, 7/12 at 11, bring your baby, ages 0-1½, to Baby Storytime: Baby & Me at the Tottenville Library, 7430 Amboy Rd.  and at 11:15 at the West New Brighton Library, 976 Castleton Ave. to Bouncing Babies.  It’s a good way to keep babies happy and meeting other babies with their caregivers. 

For teens 13-18, Port Richmond Library hosts Hands-On Science: Teen Jam Session at 75 Bennett St. on Thursday at 4.

The Borough President’s FREE Sunset Summer Concert Series continues on Thursday at 7 at Bloomingdale Park (Ramona Ave. & Lenevar Ave.).   The fabulous Joan Caddell & the Midnight Choir and Generations will entertain you. Grab a blanket or chair and meet up with friends for a fun evening under the stars.  Read my “Weekend Events” next week for the line-up throughout Staten Island. 

Don’t miss the 115th Anniversary Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Society, 247 Virginia Ave., Rosebank, beginning 7/12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and continuing 7/20, 21, 22 at 7:30 each evening.  The festival is great for the kids and kids at heart and features entertainment and delicious food. Visit the National Landmarked Grotto on the grounds built by the local Italian-American community beginning in 1937. Call 347-204-5203 for more info and schedule of events. 

The City Parks Puppetmobile presents “The Big Good Wolf” at Christopher J. Igneri Playground, Schmidts Ln. & Manor Rd. on Friday, 7/13 at 11.  All age groups are invited.

A FREE performance by Broadway in the Boros will be held at the National Lighthouse Museum, 200 The Promenade at Lighthouse Point on Friday at noon.  The casts of the blockbuster "Wicked" and "The Band's Visit" will perform. The event will be hosted by Julie James of the SiriusXM Radio show "On Broadway" and is sponsored by National Lighthouse Museum, NYC Economic Development Corp., NYC Dept. of Transportation, S.I. Borough Pres. James Oddo, and City Councilwoman Debi Rose. Along with performances, there will be Broadway ticket giveaways and trivia games. 

My all-time favorite event, Sprinklerfest 2018 takes place at Snug Harbor Cultural Center, 1000 Richmond Terr. Friday at noon. Try to bring the kiddies and even just go yourself to this terrific event, especially if it is a hot, humid day.  You will be happy you went if only to watch happy, smiling children darting in and out of the sprinklers.  

The Greenbelt Nature Center, 700 Rockland Ave. hosts a Saturday Morning Walk in our Woodlands on Saturday, 7/14 at 10 for ages 8+.

Bring your children to a FREE Storytime and Activities featuring The Princess and the Pit Stop at Barnes & Noble, 2245 Richmond Ave., on Saturday at 11. 

Experience Stargazing in Great Kills Park, Hylan Blvd. & Buffalo St. on Saturday at 8:30.  FREE for all ages.

Back to the Beach 2018 returns to the Midland Beach Promenade and Boardwalk (Fr. Capodanno Blvd. & Lincoln Ave.) on Saturday, 7/14 and Sunday 7/15 beginning at noon.  This is Staten Island’s biggest event featuring vendors, live music, rides, games for the kiddies, great food and an amazing fireworks display on Saturday.  Look for the Gillani Homes booth, stop and say, “Hi” and take a chance on a Lottery House.  See photos below of visitors to our booth at Back to the Beach in the past.

Join Kayak Staten Island for FREE public kayaking off the shore at Conference House Park, 7455 Hylan Blvd. on Sunday 7/15 from 11-2!  Boats and life jackets will be provided for a short paddle. Launch help and paddling tips are given by experienced kayakers at the shore and on the water. Wear clothes and shoes that can get wet. I want to share a clipping from 1934 from the archives of the Staten Island Advance "Heat Wave Passing; Mercury Hits 103".  The picture is of a man named George Malone of 514 Richmond Terr. who has packed his pajamas in a weekend case and is ready for a night in the park.  He states, "Fashion be hanged. I set the style."  I give George kudos for setting the style in his shorts and t-shirt.  In the 1930's, he must have gotten a lot of "heat" (pun intended) but he coped the best way he knew how.  Are there any old-timers out there who knew George or family members who remember/rejoice in his 15 minutes of fame in the "sun"?I welcome comments and photos at events you have attended.  If you want to share events for me to post, email or call me.
