The weather was brutal through the week and beyond, but we New Yorkers dealt with it, hopefully attending free concerts, movies, fun times at the New York Public Libraries, at Community Days or Sprinklerfest at Snug Harbor. I worked in my garden, weeded, cut down branches from dead trees and bushes. It’s hot anyway so why not be productive! I enjoyed the breezes on my porch and chatted with neighbors. What did you do?
The 116th Anniversary Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Society continued through last weekend. It didn’t disappoint with games of chance, live music and yummy Italian food especially the smell of zeppoles that beckoned the crowds. Make it a point to visit the National Landmarked shrine on the grounds at 243 Virginia Ave. Visit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Lady_of_Mount_Carmel_Grotto to learn about how the grotto was built. Join the Ocean Breeze Twilight Runs: Neon Dress Theme Night on Wednesday from 7-8 through 8/28. This free event features a two-mile, fast and flat course on the scenic Midland Beach Promenade. The Runs are designed for runners of all levels and everyone is welcome to participate. Please note: Registration takes place from 6:15–6:45 p.m., on the day of each run. Study Drawing Fundamentals at the historic H.H. Biddle House, 70 Satterlee St. in Conference House Park on Thursday from 10-12:30. Perspective, shading, and observing the form are crucial tools to a successful draftsperson. The three-week class will balance the study of traditional drawing techniques as well as learning how to apply these techniques to personal work and in-class studies such as portraiture, still life, and landscapes.
