The 9/11 Memorial Ceremony held at the Postcards Memorial at the St. George Esplanade was touching and heartfelt. The speeches, especially those of our esteemed Borough President James Oddo, brought us back to that fateful day, how we came together as one as a Nation, State, City, Island. We remembered all those who died, and those who are still suffering from diseases post 9/11. During the ceremony, two people were overcome by the heat and the EMT’s responded immediately. We were reminded at that moment how valuable our first responders are—empathy, heroism, saviors. WE WILL NEVER FORGET! Below are photos from that evening.
The 12th Westerleigh Folk Music and Art Festival took place on Saturday in the beautiful Westerleigh Park. I met many friends, enjoyed making new friends and listening to the music groups. Following are photos from the festival.

On Wednesday from 6:30–8:30, Con Edison Family Science Night presents: Optics and Lasers at the Greenbelt Nature Center in Blood Root Valley, 700 Rockland Ave. Visible, ultraviolet, and infrared light is all around us! It affects everything from how we see the world to the plants we grow for food. These experiments explore the behavior of light and its interactions with matter. Suitable for ages 8-10 with an adult chaperone.
Bring the kiddies to Folktale/Fable and Craft on Thursday 9/19 at 3:30 at the South Beach Library, 21-25 Robin Rd. Children will listen to “The Crocodile and the Scorpion” by Rebecca Emberley and Ed Emberley. The children will make a crocodile with pipe cleaners and afterwards discuss the moral and create a character from the story.
The family will enjoy Movies Under the Stars: Aladdin (2019) on Friday, 9/20 from 7:30–9:30 at Lemon Creek Park, Seguine Ave. & Johnston Terr. A street rat pursues the princess of Agrabah with the help of a powerful genie who can grant him three wishes. His primary opponent is a malevolent sorcerer who serves as the city's grand vizier and the chief advisor to the sultan. Arrive early, bring a blanket or chair to sit on.
Attend the NY African Film Festival on Friday from 8-11 at the Craft House Outdoor Patio, 60 Van Duzer St. Join Staten Island Arts' Cinema Connex a screening of the re-released restored classic film "Hyenas," directed by Djibril Diop Mambéty, whose body of work is recognized as one of the most influential in the history of African film. Introduction is by Mahen Bonetti, Executive Director of the African Film Festival. Doors open an hour before the screening. Grab dinner and a drink from Craft House's burger and BBQ menu and beer garden.
You will not want to miss National Museum Day on Saturday 9/21! This is the day you will enjoy FREE ADMISSION at more than 1,600 participating museums. The event encourages museums, galleries and historic sites to open their doors to free entry. At Snug Harbor, the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art, The Noble Collection, Alice Austen House, are among those participating on Staten Island. On Saturday, 9/21 from 9:30–12, join NYC Parks Stewardship's monthly Green Neighborhood-Forest Restoration event in Conference House Park which takes place at Lenape Playground at Swinnerton St. and Billop Ave. Volunteers will learn how to install deer guards to protect the young forest from the large deer population! You will be trained to identify which species of trees deer favor, how to identify browse, and how to properly install the guards onto the trees. Come dressed in boots, long pants and clothing that can get dirty. Please bring your own water bottle to this event. Please note: Space is limited and registration is required. Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult chaperone.
Attend the 2019 Raritan Bay Festival at Conference House Park Great Lawn, 7455 Hylan Blvd. on Saturday from 12–4. The Raritan Bay Festival is hosted by the Conference House Park Conservancy and Kayak Staten Island. Festivities will include kayaking, music, craft vendors, food vendors, beach walks, and more. Parks' Mounted PEP will also be on hand to greet the public.
On Saturday from 12-5, The Road Home Foundation proudly presents The 5th Annual Global War on Terror Military Appreciation Day hosted by the Marine Corps League 246th detachment in partnership with Rolling Thunder Chapter 2 NY at 46 Ontario Ave. The event will feature Live Music by The Resistance, Food, Raffles, Vendors, Games, 50/50 and so much more. Snugs, together with Fresh Mown Lawn, All Hands on Deck, Carl Wurzbach and Crossfire Guitar Ensemble as they pay tribute to: The Beatles’ Abbey Road 50th Anniversary on Saturday from 7:30-10 at Everything Goes Café, 208 Bay St. This is a tribute to one of the greatest music albums of all time, by the masters John, Paul, George and Ringo.
The 9th Annual Anthony D’Andrea Festa and Motori D’Italia will take place Saturday, 9/21 from noon-7 and Sunday 9/22 from 11-6 at Casa Belvedere, 79 Howard Ave. Car aficionados will enjoy “Motors of Italy”, namely, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Lancia and Pagani as well as an art exhibit, continuous music, live entertainment, activities for children, wine tasting, cooking demonstrations, raffles, bocce clinic, pumpkin patch and a farm stand with fresh produce.
