Did you attend some of the last outdoor musical performances before Fall--the Summer Sunset Concert Series with Joan Caddell and the Midnight Choir and The Black Ties at Snug Harbor and the British Invasion with the Staten Island Philharmonic at Alice Austen Park?  I hope you took advantage of these FREE events and enjoyed your summer.  Below are some photos from Snug Harbor.

OK--time to move on. . .Back to school, back to work after a long holiday weekend, time to look through your winter clothes and store the summer wardrobe and adjust to cooler and shorter days.  I always mourn the end of summer but also enjoy working on my garden transitioning to the fall flowers and vegetables and planting bulbs for the spring.

Bring the babies age from 0-18 mos. to Story Time, Wednesday 9/4 at 11 at the Todt Hill-Westerleigh Library, 2550 Victory Blvd. Your baby will enjoy the lap sit program and listen to fun and interactive stories and songs.

Family Story Time for age 3+ is on Wednesday at 4 at the New Dorp Library, 309 New Dorp Ln.  The kiddies will enjoy hearing books read aloud, finger plays action rhymes and coloring.

Get motivated and moving on the Wednesday Night Group Hike from 6-9 at Greenbelt Nature Center in Blood Root Valley, 700 Rockland Ave. at Brielle Ave. throughout the year. This hike typically covers five miles.  Bring a headlamp, hydration and sturdy shoes.

Open Play: Babies takes place on Thursday 9/5 at 11:45 at the South Beach Library, 21-25 Robin Rd. Bring the kiddies for a library play date and meet other caregivers as you explore developmentally appropriate play materials in a safe, warm and joyful environment. Extend your child’s learning through play!

Participate in Free Computer Classes-MS Excel Intermediate Workshop at the Stapleton Library, 132 Canal St. on Thursday at 2. Learn intermediate skills of the MS Excel program. The workshop will cover using formulae to perform calculations and structure your spreadsheet.  Laptops will be provided for participants. 

Join Close Knit on Thursday from 2-4 at the Noble Maritime Collection, 1000 Richmond Terr. the longest-running public program free and open to knitters of all skill levels.  The goods members make are contributed to community charities including the The Seamen's Church Institute's Christmas at Sea program and the Elizabeth Coalition to House the Homeless. Consider joining us, or tell a knitter that you know!

For children ages 5-12, join the Mariners Harbor Library, 206 South Ave. on Thursday at 4 for Steamtastic, a unique STEAM-focused activity! Use your imagination and have fun with science experiments, computer games, building challenges, and other crafts and activities. Call the library at 212-621-0690 to find out what you will be exploring this month! First come, first served.

Attend Wil Wynn’s Curiously Refreshing OPEN MIC Experience on Thursday from 7-9 at Everything Goes Café & Neighborhood Stage, 208 Bay St.  Poet Will Wyn is the conductor of this minty fresh event with the involvement of his extraordinary peers. Poets will take turns performing other people's poems. Before each performance, the audience will read the poem projected on the screen. The audience will mark their impressions of various aspects of each poem, written and performed on scorecards so the poets will receive the anonymous feedback from their work after the event. Following this first segment will be OPEN MIC, so bring your poems!

On Friday 9/6 at 7:30 at Everything Goes Café & Neighborhood Stage, 208 Bay St. attend Film Event: “Part of the Scene” an Indie documentary short. From 9/21/13 to 7/15/15, local SI musician, Phoebe Blue, organized and hosted monthly 'Creative Happenings.' Out of 144 acts, there were no repeat performances. This film is DIY documentary coverage of the final few shows. For ages 7+, attend Greenbelt on the Go: Bat Hike on Friday from 7:30-9:30 at Clove Lakes Park, 626 Clove Rd. Walk around Clove Lakes Park to look for bats. Learn what they eat, how they catch prey and understand more about these creatures of the night. Register by calling 718-351-3450 or email naturecenter@sigreenbelt.org 

Bring the family to Movies Under the Stars: Aquaman on Friday from 7:309:30 at Seaside Wildlife Nature Park, Nelson Ave. & Tennyson Dr. for an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas.  Aquaman, starring Jason Momoa, reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean, Arthur Curry, and takes him on the journey of his lifetime—one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be... a king.  Come early and bring a chair or blanket.

Attend Community Appreciation Day at Be Yoga & Dance, 1270 Bay St. with free classes all day on Saturday 9/7 beginning at 8:30 a.m.  If you are a community member, new to yoga or to the studio, come to celebrate the power of togetherness including raffles, light refreshments.  For info on class schedules, check out their website: beyogadance.com

Volunteer on Saturday from 9-3 with It's My Park at Allison Pond Park, at Prospect Ave. and Brentwood Ave. with Friends of Allison Pond Park as they clean and beautify Allison Pond Park. 

Participate in Staten Island Bocce Tournament on Saturday from 9-4 at South Beach Bocce Courts, Drury Ave. and Fr. Capodanno Blvd. Join NYC Parks for their annual citywide face-off. Players compete in borough-wide tournaments, with the best teams advancing to the citywide championship on 9/21 at Marine Park, Brooklyn. The tournament is open to ages 18+; 16 teams maximum. Check in begins at 8:30 a.m. and the tournament starts at 9:00 a.m. Rain date for this event is Sunday, 9/8. Participate in the Free Chess Program on Saturday from 9:30-11:30 at Greenbelt Recreation Center, 501 Brielle Ave.  The program is run by SI Tech students.

On Saturday at 10 at the St George Library Center, 5 Central Ave, Staten Island OutLOUD welcomes Islanders to Memoirs OutLOUD–Creative Writing Workshop, a stimulating writing studio, open to adults only. Whether you are an experienced writer, or just beginning to explore your writing potential, this free workshop offers a welcoming and nurturing environment. If you plan to come to Memoirs OutLOUD for the first-time, please arrive by 10 a.m., as a courtesy to all our other workshop participants.  Bring a pen and notebook or paper.  If you’d like to read any of your previous work, we’d be happy to accommodate, as time permits.  If you are just beginning to explore your writing potential, that’s fine; we will help you get started at your own pace.  When you arrive, please speak with Vicki, our workshop leader; she will welcome you and help you get situated.

Meet your friends or make new friends at the Saturday Morning Walks from 10-11 at Clay Pit Ponds Visitors Center, 2351 Veterans Rd. W.  Learn about the flora and fauna in our Park or just get out, get exercise and enjoy the fresh air!  All ages welcome.  The hike will be at least one mile each week.

Join a live reenactment of the September 11, 1776 Peace Conference Celebration on Saturday from 11-4 at Conference House Park, 7455 Hylan Blvd. with Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and Edward Rutledge meeting with Lord Admiral Howe. There will be colonial music and dancing, 18th-century crafts, and historic house tours. Admission is $5-Adults, $3-Children under 12, $3-Seniors.

Your family will enjoy Movies Under the Stars: Avengers: End Game on Saturday from 7:30–10:30 at Detective Russell Timoshenko Soccer Field in FDR Boardway and Beach, Slater Ave. and Fr. Capodanno Blvd. After the devastating events of Avengers: Infinity War (2018), the universe is in ruins. With the help of remaining allies, the Avengers assemble once more in order to reverse Thanos' actions and restore balance to the universe.  Come early and bring a chair or blanket.

Attend a performance by Outside the Temple at Everything Goes Café & Neighborhood Stage, 208 Bay St. on Saturday 9/7 at 8. This wonderful local band plays a great original reggae-like sound with spiritual and philosophical lyrics.

The Staten Island Chapter of the AAA hosts Stargazing in Great Kills on Saturday from 8-11 at Great Kills Park, Hylan Blvd. & Buffalo St. Chair: Joe DiNapoli.

Participate in the Nature Bike Tour on Sunday, 9/8 from 1112:30 at Sand Ln. and Fr. Capadanno Blvd. in FDR Boardwalk and Beach. Bike through Brookfield Park while enjoying the vistas and nature. Participants should bring their own bike and helmet and will learn about biking protocol in NYC Parks. Please note: Participants are chosen by lottery. Get your hiking boots on for Trail of the Month: Yellow Trail/Moses Mountain on Sunday from 11-3. Meet at the corner of Manor Rd. and Rockland Ave. and participate in a fast-paced hike climbing Moses Mountain before heading to High Rock Park and into Reeds Basket Willow Swamp (approx. 7 miles).

Want to know how to receive the GO!HEALTHY FOOD BOX?   Every Tuesday through 11/19 between 4-6 go to Goodhue Center, 304 Prospect Ave. in New Brighton, and sign up and pay $10 Cash, credit/Debit and Health Bucks! (or $8 with EBT or FMNP) at least one week in advance for $30 worth of fresh local produce. Come back the next week (same time, same place) to pick up your bag and taste the weekly recipe! The Children’s Aid is on hiatus for a few weeks so the next time you can sign up for the Go-Healthy food box is Tuesday 9/3 for pick-up on 9/10.
