Travis - Staten Island, NY

Travis is a neighborhood at the west-central shore of Staten Island, bordered to the north by Bloomfield, and to the west, south, and east by the Fresh Kills inlets. Prior to 1800, the area was known as New Blazing Star, named after a popular tavern. In the late 19th century, the American Linoleum Manufacturing Company opened a factory here, lending the name Linoleumville. Travis, also called Chelsea, has become the site of some commercial and industrial development, as well as residential. Travis contains its own elementary school, P.S. 26, with other schools in the surrounding areas. The neighborhood is served by a few local bus lines and numerous express buses which run to Manhattan via New Jersey.
