I am always seeking events for my weekly blog so I contacted Shantrice King, the media guru for Pastry Lover’s Choice, when I noticed an event she posted on silive.com.

Pastry Lover’s Choice (everyone needs a little “PLC”) is located at 370 Van Duzer St. in the blocks that also include Hash Tag, Vida, Duzers Local Café & Market, The Vibe, Post Exterminating, among other shops/businesses. Stopping by on a recent Saturday, I met the owner, Sahera Threats, who is the heart and soul of PLC.  While we spoke, a steady stream of customers entered requesting treats of all kinds—Specialty Coffee drinks, cinnamon rolls, a homemade special birthday cake.  Every one of these customers spoke highly of Pastry Chef, Sahera, and her wonderful shop.

Sahera's two sons, Zion and Ammar, her able assistants, also help with the tasks at hand.

Sahera relocated to Staten Island from Queens with her family a number of years ago and settled in the St. George area.  She always cooked and baked for her own enjoyment.  Her passion, however, was Pastry Arts; after she graduated from the Art Institute of New York (formerly New York Restaurant School), she knew what her future would be.

The event on Sunday, “My Kid and Me Valentine’s Day Cookies Workshop”, was a hit!  For 3 hours, Moms, Grandmas and Aunts assisted the kiddies with this hands-on lesson. Sahera taught the bakers exactly how to roll out the dough, cut out the cookies using various shaped cookie cutters and then to the ovens the cookies were sent.

All were invited back to the kitchen for instructions on the proper mixing of icing and how to make the correct consistency.

She showed us how to crack an egg and separate the whites from the yolks (this is a difficult task!). Back to the front of the store to start decorating (my favorite part!).  These neophytes learned how to add a few drops of water to the icing to fill the decorating bags, how to outline a cookie and then “flood” it and finally methods of decorating with different colors to make the cookies POP!

The hours sped by as the icing on the cookies dried and then each baker received a “Certificate of Completion”. Were they ever proud as they took their cookies home in a box!

You can purchase anything you can imagine at Pastry Lover’s Choice.  From specialty coffees, tea, hot chocolate, spiced Chai, every imaginable cupcake flavor and icing you can think of, including special cupcakes—Chocolate peanut butter cup, salted caramel crunch, pina colada, red velvet, among others, apple turnovers, cinnamon rolls, rugelach, cookies, cake pops. Everything is made fresh each day. The top seller in the store is the delectable carrot cake.  Yummy!

AND Sahera hosts two events each month.  On February 26, from 11-2, an Adult Cake Decorating with Fondant class will be held at Pastry Lover’s Choice.  You can sign up and reserve your spot by calling 917-830-0146 or email info@pastryloverschoice.com You can visit their Facebook page--Pastry Lover's Choice--for a list of future workshops, “like” the page and let your friends know what a great experience you had at one of the workshops or  enjoying her homemade treats.  You can also visit their website http://pastryloverschoice.com/online/about/ where you can download an order form.  Make sure to visit and order something special for Valentine’s Day!

Pastry Lover's Choice is open weekdays Tuesday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.  The store is closed Sunday and Monday except for special events.
