On April 10, 125 Staten Island restaurants will open their doors for breakfast, lunch and dinner to the Dine Out campaign.  They will donate 20% of the day's proceeds to benefit Project Hospitality.

The Rev. Terry Troia, executive director of Project Hospitality, noted that massive federal cuts have hit food benefit programs as more borough residents become dependent on pantries and food kitchens.  She stated that in 2013, Project Hospitality provided a record 2.2 million meals at its soup kitchens and food pantries and more than 38,000 folks of all ages availed themselves of their services.

In the last three months of 2013, nearly 109,300 meals were served in the Hurricane Sandy-ravaged zip codes 10305 and 10306.  Most of those emergency meals went to senior citizens.  She reported that the Hurricane's effects are still widespread, with a loss of affordable housing pushing the prices for real estate on the market even higher.  Many of these people are struggling to pay a mortgage in this area and rent elsewhere and put food on the table.

Diners will be able to provide additional donations via envelopes on their tables the day of the event.  There will also be raffles sold with a chance to win lunch or dinner at the participating restaurants.  The founding corporate sponsor is the Staten Island Advance and the founding community sponsor is Borough President James Oddo.  The lead sponsor is Catering by Framboise.

For more information on DINE OUT AGAINST HUNGER, and a list of participating restaurants, call 718-448-1544, ext. 163 or consult www.dineoutstatenisland.com

If you dine out once or twice a week or not at all, please make an effort to dine out on April 10 at one of the participating restaurants.  You will make a difference.
