Winters on Staten Island can be harsh at times, but there are some things you can do now to get yourself ready for what’s ahead. Preparing for the cold before the worst months are here can make your life easier when the snow starts to fly. Here are a few tips to consider.
For Your Car
Getting a tune up for the winter is a good idea, especially since it can get so cold here. It’s important to know you have the right weight of oil, you have plenty of antifreeze and your battery isn’t getting old. If you’re not sure what shape your battery is in, any mechanic or most auto part stores can do a load test on it. This will let you know what you can expect during normal driving conditions and also what you can expect of your battery in the worst conditions. You will also want to inspect your tires to make sure they have the proper tread on them for winter driving conditions.
In Your Car
Unfortunately, surprise storms can happen. It’s a good idea to have an emergency kit in your car for times like these. An emergency kit should include water, food that won’t spoil due to weather changes (such as granola bars), a flash light with batteries and an emergency blanket.Â
For You
Clothes are very important during winter so it’s important to make sure everyone in your family is properly dressed. Since most heat escapes from our head, hats can be a great addition when you’re winterizing your wardrobe. Scarfs are also a great accessory to help you conserve heat. Gloves are mittens prevent frostbite, especially on young children, and proper winter boots should keep your feet warm and be waterproof to prevent socks from getting wet.
Don’t Forget Your Pets
Cats and dogs can both die from exposure to harsh elements. Make space for outdoor pets in the garage or another area, especially on those cold winter nights.
