Today is April 5, but it is also opening day for the North Shore shopping experience at Gerardi's Farmers Market at 561 Richmond Terrace in New Brighton. 

Enzo Gerardi established this landmark in 1985 at the former Gypsum Plant on Richmond Terrace.  Since then , I have been a loyal customer of Gerardi's.  Enzo and family own a 40 acre farm in NJ and sell fresh fruits, vegetables and grocery items (milk, eggs, etc., fresh bread) at great prices. 

The displays of a huge selection of flowers and plants abound together with the green house across Richmond Terrace.  You can park right in front of the market or across the street where you will be closer to the shrubs and trees if that is what your pleasure is.  Check out the lion and horse!  The traffic can be a little hairy, but there is always someone from Gerardi's to help you maneuver your purchases to wherever you park.  They also offer free estimates for all your landscaping needs. 

Most likely, when you enter the market, you will be greeted by a smiling Enzo beckoning you with a taste of perhaps a honeydew one day or a watermelon another.  His family and staff are all friendly, helpful and constant.  Customer service is excellent.  I don't know how he does it, but I have always enjoyed shopping at Gerardi's.  I plant my own vegetable garden and purchase the starters from him.  You can ask him questions about anything; he will oblige.

Check out the pansies in the picture.  They come in every color and are great for planting this time of year!  (I'll visit Gerardi's after church tomorrow to pick up an assortment for my front porch.)  On Sunday morning, and every day, I guarantee you will meet your neighbors and friends and make new ones while you are shopping.  As the season continues, different plants will be displayed ready for your purchase. Gerardi's is open 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. every day and on Sunday till 4:00 p.m. from April to November.

The only down side to Gerardi's is when it closes. The first year Gerardi's was in business, he was about to close in mid-November.  I couldn't believe the "constant" on Richmond Terrace was disappearing.  It was almost like saying goodbye to a good friend.  Well, I guess farmers do have to take a break sometimes.  Right?
