Water and medications are the most important, followed closely by non-perishable food and battery-powered appliances in case the power goes out.

You may also think about investing in some type of emergency heating system for your home to make sure you’re never stuck without heat during a severe storm. A backup generator is one popular option, and if you go that route, just make sure you get one powerful enough the run all of the appliances you’ll need and that you have it installed with proper ventilation in mind. 

Understand the Warnings

One of the most confusing things to keep track of when you’re waiting for a possible winter storm to hit is the litany of advisories, watches and warnings issued by the National Weather Service. While it’s good to be prepared regardless of the likelihood of a particular storm hitting your home directly, a storm watch merely indicates that severe weather is likely, while a winter storm warning means the storm is just around the corner and you need to make sure you’re ready.

In Case You’re Stuck in Your Car

Since the easiest way to get around many areas of Staten Island is by driving, it’s important that you have some emergency provisions in your car in the event you get stranded away from home. That basically means food, water and blankets so that you’ll be able to stay hydrated and warm until help arrives.
