Developers continue to see the value that Staten Island holds. The most recent acqusition comes in the form of a 676 acre plot of land in the Bloomfield section. Originally set to house a Nascar arena, the property has been sold to a Staten Island Marine Development firm which plans to repair the site for industiral use. After being in limbo for years, residents are looking forward to discovering how this project will translate into job growth and economic development.

The area has undergone some maintainence since its purchase, mainly cleanup of debris from last years Super Storm Sandy in compliance with the Emergency Watershed Protection progam. The EWP was created by Congress to remedy any damage caused by natural disaters. To further satisfy the programs requirements, the area will be filled with 6 million cubic yards of clean fill material to increase elevation 22 feet above sea level.

These precautions are neccessary as the site is directly adjacent to Arthur Kill. With access to freight railroad, the West Shore Expressway, and Arthur Kill, the location makes a prime area for commercial development. Perhaps the most valuable aspect is the close proximity to the busiest port system on the east coast. It is imprortant to note that a portion of the propery, 252 acres of freshwater and tidal wetlands, will be preserved and never developed on.

According to The New York Times, the development plans include roughly 135 acres for the marine terminal along Arthur Kill where cranes will unload shipping containers. Warehouses to hold the goods are to be placed in the eastern section.

It's safe to say that the redelvopment will result in a boost to Staten Island's economy and job growth.
